[Report] Dreadstill Almost gets there 9th at Pawtucket $500

The 5/17/08 Pawtucket $500 tournament, 34 Players had 6 rounds of swiss with cut to top 8.
I went 4-2-0 and came in 9th out of 34 because of tie breakers. Anyways, to the decklist.

    Ug Dreadstill:
    Lands:20
    4 Mishra's Factory
    3 Wasteland
    3 Flooded Strand
    3 Polluted Delta
    2 Tropical Island
    5 Island

    Creatures:9
    4 Phyrexian Dreadnought
    3 Trinket Mage
    2 Tarmogoyf

    Noncreature Spells:31
    4 Standstill
    4 Stifle
    4 Brainstorm
    4 Force of Will
    4 Daze
    3 Counterbalance
    2 Sensei's Divining Top
    2 Spell Snare
    2 Trickbind
    1 Engineered Explosives
    1 Pithing Needle

    Sideboard:15
    3 Krosan Grip
    3 Blue Elemental Blast
    3 Tormod's Crypt
    2 Echoing Truth
    1 Engineered Explosives
    1 Pithing Needle
    1 Tarmogoyf
1 Gaea's Blessing [Fuck Scarecrow, someone is bound to try to break it in Legacy]

    Anyways... on to my games.
Round 1: Rich Shay (The_Atog_Lord) Ugr Dreadstill
We both know that were playing a mirror match so we talk about some recent meta testing and get to it...
G1: We play a long game of Draw GO each sitting on 1 factory. Then Rich wins a massive counterwar over my attempt at Tarmogoyf [we each blew 2 Forces and he finished it with a spell snare] Eventually Rich finds Factory #2 [and a few turns later #3] and goes to town. Neither of us found a Nought this game.
G2: I get down an early CB/T and Nought ends it a few turns later.
G3: I mull down to 5 and Rich gets CB/T down turn 2 with the help of a force. He then beats me down with 2 Goyfs and a Factory, I land a nought but it's too little, too late.
    Rounds:0-1 Games:1-2

Round 2: [Sorry I forgot your name... lost my notes on this round.] UW Fish
G1: I wasteland a Rishadan Port and then a Maze of Ith. A few turns later I drop a nought with FOW and 2x Daze Backup and he quickly goes the distance.
G2: I get down an early CB/T and shortly after kill him with a Nought.
    Rounds:1-1 Games:3-2

Round 3: Matt (TrialbyFire) UGR Thrash
G1:I get massive card advantage and he can't find a creature. Mage goes the distance.
G2: I'm mana screwed and he wastes two of the lands I do find Mongoose goes the distance.
G3: I get down counterbalance/Top but make a play error and don't brainstorm at the end of my own turn while he is tapped out to put the Krosan Grip in my hand on top to protect CB. He capitalizes and drops 2 Mongeese. He beats me down from there.
    Rounds: 1-2 Games:4-4

Round 4: Mike (Unreg?) RG Beats
G1: I drop CB/T and Nought soon after and thats all she wrote.
G2: Almost the same as G1 except its 2 Noughts.
    Rounds 2-2 Games:6-4

I look at the standings and realize that the way it is breaking down there will be at least 1 4-2 in top 8 and my Tiebreakers are really good so I go on with my last to rounds.

Round 5: Eli (Morphling420) Uw Dreadstill
G1: Me and Eli both have early Noughts and Trade. We then play Draw Go for a while under a standstill until he pops it at the end of my turn and then drops 2 Noughts with a lot of counter back up on his turn. I lose the turn after.
G2: I just rush out a turn 2 Dreadnought with FOW backup and Kill him two turns later.
G3: We play a long game under SS, he Has Meddling Mage on K-Grip and a Factory and I have EE for 1, and 2 Mishra's Factory's after a while of Draw go I BS at the end of his turn popping the SS and then drop a Nought with Triple counter back up. The Next turn I drop another and he scoops.
    Rounds:3-2 Games:8-5

Round 6: Jon (Unreg?) with UG Kavu Predator Grow
G1: I have turn 2 CB/T and smash him with a Nought 2 turns later.
G2: He Land grants and I see [FOW, Counterspell, 2x Counterbalance, And Kavu Predator] I then play land and pass. He drops a Predator and I decide to make him work for it and Spell Snare he thinks for a while and lets it get countered. I waste his trop on my turn. he then attempts counterbalance which I let resolve and I waste another land keeping him off UU. I soon drop A nought and he flips a Kavu Predator off of CB then attempts to force, I force back and then Stifle nought. Two clicks from nought bring his life down to 0.

So its a waiting game we realize that 1 4-2 is getting in and the three are myself, Dave Feinstein (Dxfiler) and Rodney Hannigan (Roodmistah) Dave ends up having just barely better tiebreakers and goes to top 8 leaving me in 9th and Rodney in 10th.

    Props:
    -Steve for Driving
    -Maagler for lending me Factory's.
    -Rodney for making Dreadstill
    -Dreadstill for being fucking Amazing
-DHGs for hosting a great tournament.

    Slops:
    -Maagler for not coming
    -Jaynel for having "family Obligations"
-Roob for getting really mana screwed in T8.
-Me mulling to 5 against Shay
-Me for letting my CB get gripped when I could have stopped it.
-Feinstein for Just barely getting in over me.

Actually, is already happening. I played a 33 person tournament this past Wednesday and 4 Servant's Stone showed. There was 1 Ugr and 3 Uw; Ugr made top 4 which split

Dreadstill almost got there for me too in T8...I do know I lost my first round to Merfolk ended up winning 3 strait rounds just to lose to D&T in my 5th round in 3 games. Ended up then defeating UGR TempoThresh but breakers got me in the end. Congrats to Rich for winning with Dreadstill!

How did you get a Dreadnought through a Maze of Ith in round two?

    Double Dazing it?

I'm guessing the "the" was supposed to be a "then".

Did you just have a Briss? I think you'll like it better with the turtleneck off.

No, I've already been there and done that. It was a birthday gathering for an old person.

Feinstein for Just barely getting in over me.
    Sorry

Good report though. I like the list alot, too.

I think you need 4 goyfs and 4 trinket mage in there, but I have no idea what you'd cut for them. Cards like trickbind/daze could probably be reduced without too much pain. Daze is actually one of my favorite cards but 4 seems excessive. Spellsnare seems too good to cut, although I found it interesting Rich did not use it.

I always wondered if the deck could run on 3 standstill but it's probably not a question worth asking.

Playing against the deck alot I think the goyf version is best and I think it should maximize its threats. On a 4 trinket build you could even run 3 dreadnought but again I might just be crazy. :p

Just some thoughts. Thanks for the report.

I agree that Daze's could be reduced, but addition trinket mages really aren't necessary, they often end up clogging your hand when you draw multiples, I pitched Trinket to FOW more than I actually played it... As for additional Goyfs they are really good but I can't see myself going higher than 2 main since I find myself not wanting the trop [do to moons and wastelands] to often so I would have times when goyfs are just dead. I did however add the 4th Goyf to the side after the tournament.
