Hadley 1/19/08 tournament had a 36 player turnout and I came in 10th place with a 4-2-0 record missing Top 8 by 1 point. As the title suggests I played Dragon Stompy. Anyways onto the decklist and report.

Round 1: BW Angel Stax, Wes (TheWes)
G1: Quick Dragon is rode to victory
G2: He hold me back with a few Vindicates and Ghostly Prisons until an eventual Armageddon+Magus of the Tabernacle goes all the way for him.
G3: We are racing, My: 1 Gathan Raiders and Simian Spirit Guide under a ghostly prison vs his Exalted Angel. Then I tap out for an Arc-Slogger and the potential next turn killing of Angel leading to win. He top-decks Armageddon and then just wins with Exalted Angel in like 2 turns.
Matches: 0-1-0 Games: 1-2-0
Round 2: GWB Aggro with Avenger and Doran
Game 1: Double Hellbent dragon is rode to victory.
Game 2: My Non-Hellbent Rakdos Pit Dragon gets him down to 1 and His Confidant revealing Umezawa's Jitte kills him.
Matches: 1-1-0 Games: 3-2-0
Round 3: Matt (Peter_Rotten) Goyf Sligh
Game 1: I have Chalice for 1 & 2 and a 3 Sphere while beating with Magus of the Moon.
Game 2: Krosan Grip kills Chalice. Goyf and Chain Lightning kill me.
Game 3: I have Trini and Chalice for 1. PR has 3 lands (1 forest and 2 mountains) he top decks a Grip. I swing with a hellbent Pit-Dragon which will probably win it for me. He Grips the Trini and sac 2 mountains to Fireblast the Dragon. It's still looking damn grim for him but I fails to draw a threat for 12 turns (Damn PR with his mod-magic). He enventually draws more lands and a Shattering Spree. He sprees the Chalice and poops out a Fanatic and 2 Grims but I top decks a Keg. ^_^. He gets in 5 damage before I wipe his board; unfortunately, for me he has 3 bolts to finish the game. I have a Slogger on top of coarse with enough land to play it and kill him. And called the topdeck to boot.
Game 3:
Matches: 1-2-0 Games:4-4-0
Round 4: Jessie, White Threshold
Game 1: I have 3 Sphere, Chalice for 1, and Double Gathan Raiders which I ride to victory.
Game 2: I drop a turn 1 Blood Moon and she scoops because she has no main deck basics.
Matches: 2-2-0, Games: 6-4-0
Round 5: Joe, Wombat
Game 1: I have Chalice at 1, 3Sphere and Double Raiders again which I ride to the win.
Game 2: I have a Dragon and an Arc-Slogger out on turn 2 thanks to some seething songs which I ride to a very quick win.
Matches:3-2-0, Games: 8-4-0
Round 6: Josh, White Threshold
Game 1: I have Rakdos Pit Dragon with Sword of Light and Shadow and Hellbent which win on turn 4.
Game 2: I Start off with a time stretch off of a turn 1 Trinisphere and then I ride Rakdos Pit Dragon and Simian Spirit Guide to Victory.
Matches: 4-2-0, Games: 10-4-0
Overall I was 10th out of 36 not a bad day but a little disappointing.
Props:
-Kevin for hosting a great tournament.
-Roodmistah and Andy for Top 8ing and repping Team Hammafist
-Trinisphere for once again showing up like every game![]()
-Me turning the 2.5 Hour drive to Hadley into a 1 Hour 45 min drive.
-Dragon Stompy for still taking first overall!
Slops:
-Terrible luck verses Stax and Goyf Sligh
-Roodmistah for being a scrub and not blowing his E.E. for 2 when he should have... It would have made him win...
-Me and Roob for scrubbing out of Top 8 this tournament.
-PR for using his Mod-Magic against me in our G2.
I've ALWAYS loved SoLS behind Jitte on the equipment depth chart. Interesting that you played it. How relevant did you feel it was? SoLS giving your protection from StP is always welcomed, and the fact that it allows your guys to slip past pesky Enforcers, Angels, etc. must be nice. Would you have liked SoFI instead of SoLS, or do you feel as though the protection from W & B + a different aspect (creature recursion) is a nice touch to this deck?
Stax can be tough. Trust me, I've probably played that match more than any other with D-Stompy. It's very much like Dragon Stompy in that it can be a bitch against anything, but tends to beat itself at least one match per tourney.
But, Goyf Sligh? I swear, for all its amazing wins, every report I read contains a loss to something that Dragon Stompy should hypothetically teabag. Ah well. Peter Rotten's a notorious cheater, after all.![]()
Nice report, in any case, and congrats. Tough luck on missing top 8 though.
I like SoLS over SoFI because of Pro: black/white also the life gain and not losing hellbent over SoFI card draw actually is relevant too, but mainly it was the Pro: Swords to Plowshares subtext...
Indeed, Indeed, and Damn PR and his damn Mod Magic. ;-)
In our testing, that match is suprisingly not that bad for Goyf Sligh. I'd only say it was slighty in favor for Dragon Stompy. You have about 7 dead cards (Moon effects), 4 lands that shock you, occasional mana burn issues, not enough critters for me to worry about Jitte, and a Pit-Dragon that dies to almost all of my removal.
That being said, you can simply start with a Trini game one and there ain't much Goyf Sligh can say to that. Chalice for 1 is also a kick in the dick, as is an early Arc Slogger.
Lastly, Goyf Sligh's Game 2 and 3 vastly improves with the addition of Shattering Spree and Grip.
Oh, just a note, I was your round one opponent. It was quite a race that last game. I'd have to agree with Taco, I usually have a decent game against dragonstompy.
Oh, and he's right in that stax always looses a round to itself. Final round of the side event in game 2 I drew 3 ghostly prisons in a row while at 2 land, and then in game 3 over 6 turns I drew 3 vindicates and 3 armageddons while once again sitting at 2 lands.
