Latest Oracle says:
"Drain Life deals 1 damage to a target creature or player for each oB you pay in addition to the casting cost. You then gain 1 life for each 1 damage dealt."
And clarifies:
"Cost reducers can be used to reduce the X part of the mana cost."
The x part is a cost, and the Oracle text says that x part is a black pipe so I'd say it blends!

The issue I see is that the cost is X so in the upper right it's a colorless X, which isn't requiring black specific ally. In the same way I don't think you could pay for hostile Spell Pierce with 4 life.

The issue I'm running into in trying to combo with him is gaining back the life lost. Sure he has lifelink but also has summoning sickness. If you cast him on you only have 6 Black mana to use unless you gain life somehow. Maybe chaining black spells and swinging is good enough but it seems poor for legacy. Maybe he's not that great....

Any great ideas for life gain?

Yes! When you cast a spell with hybrid Mana, you're technically supposed to announce what color combination you're casting the spell as. Once announced, it's now a black cost you can pay with life.

Trying to just list cards that become free, or almost free...
Unfortunately nothing game-breaking and therefore not legacy playable.

Turn 2 Land + Dark Rit + Krrik + some skeletal Scrying/sign in blood/Cruel bargain effect + nuke your opponent with your fresh black cards and sac Children of Korlis to go back to 20. Repeat.

Funny, to me, Krrik seems also tailored for Reanimator deck playing Vilis, Broker of Blood

The only risk of having them 2 on the board at the same time is to deck yourself... and again, LabMan could save the day.
