Thread: [Deck] Elves Combo

    Re: [Deck] Elves Combo

Thanks for all the info man, we all appreciate that.

I gotta say though, the combo works so much better/faster if you give the deck as many one drops as possible. Use that with 4 pacts and glimpses to ensure the combo never gets tripped up. Mirror entity, while providing some cool combo options, is far far too slow to be viable. I am of course thinking from the mindset of moving this deck into the decks to beat section sometime in the future, and no build with mirror entity will ever get there.

The problem to that approach is that it's a complete dog to decks capable of disrupting your goldfish (and most decks are), and ultimately there isn't a lot of incentitive to play it over faster glass cannons eg Belcher or SI.

Ah but there is a huge incentive. If you are playing something capable of stopping your storm combo (be it storm hate, counters, whatever), you side out glimpses and something else of your choice and you side in Leylines and Elvish champion and go aggro. This won me so many games I can't even tell you. You storm game one, they sideboard to stop you, and you come back with an uncounterable aggro deck. They have no idea how to handle it.

    In a word, malleability

Joraga Warcaller is the best aggro cool guy for this deck.

He is pretty phenominal, but he's already got at least one spot in most maindecks. I'm talking about the malleability the sb gives the deck.

Would you like to share your list?

I was working something similar to this but everytime I work on my Elves deck, my ADD kicks in and I always end up working on another decks. (I have put together Quinn, Ichorid and Thopters in the process of trying to give my Elf deck a face-lift)

Although, my initial idea was to play Aggro-Elves and turn it into combo post-side board. I have this impression that by doing it this way instead, I will be able to catch my opponent off-guard.
I am convinced that WotC is "dumbing" the game because of all the stupid posts they come across on MTG-related forums

    Here ya go:

    Main:
    4 Birchlore Rangers
    2 Elvish Archdruid
    4 Elvish Visionary
    6 Forest
    4 Fyndhorn Elves
    4 Glimpse of Nature
    4 Heritage Druid
    1 Joraga Warcaller
    4 Llanowar Elves
    4 Misty Rainforest
    4 Nettle Sentinel
    4 Quirion Ranger
    1 Regal Force
    4 Summoner's Pact
    2 Survival of the Fittest
    1 Tendrils of Agony
    3 Verdant Catacombs
    4 Wirewood Symbiote

    SB:
    1 Elvish Champion
    3 Fecundity
    3 Krosan Grip
    4 Leyline of Lifeforce
    4 Tormod's Crypt

The 2 Survivals in the main are not final, I'm not sure what to put there but the pacts are just phenominal and I need 2 more tutors for it to be effective

    Re: [Deck] Elves Combo

It's definitely better to start combo because they are not going to be prepared for storm pre board but they are likely at least somewhat prepared for aggro. And then post board if they prepare for storm those slots are dead against aggro, but if they prepare for aggro that can still somewhat help them against storm. Thus, playing storm game one and then aggro game 2 (unless you think they can't prep for storm) is the way to go.

how come nobody runs sylvan tutor? I would think it would be better that weird harvest as it is allot cheaper to use. You can also use it on turn 1 or 2 without having to pay 4 on your next turn like Summoner's Pact

    Any thoughts?

Worldly tutor is alot better, and that does not make the cut since it is worse when you are comboing off. I stopped running pact in my list, I found it was too unsafe to use it most of the time. I use Sylvan messengers, they work great.

The problem with Sylvan messenger is non-elves go to the bottom of the library, like Regal Force and especially Glimpse.

After some thought I do agree that worldly tutor should not be in the deck. Here is another question Leyline of Lifeforce vs Vexing Shusher for the side board.

Neither. Aside from counterbalance you really don't care for counters so just go with Grip for those spots.

With Krosan Grip in do I need viridian shaman in the sideboard? I would expect that I don't need it.

I gotta disagree. Leyline is the hands down best sideboard card for this deck. It stops all counterspells, countertop, chalice, and any other trickery you might encounter. When playing against any of these elements you side out the 4 glimpses for 4 leylines, and side out your storm kill (if you play one) for an elvish champion. You come back with an uncounterable aggro deck. It's amazing

    Re: [Deck] Elves Combo

and yes the fact that sylvan messenger puts glimpse on the bottom means it is a horrible choice. I'm often waiting for glimpse but never waiting for elves.

Even in the best case scenario that means that you've started the game a card down and created three dead topdecks versus decks that are guaranteed to have sided in mass removal. The worst case scenario involves you setting yourself up to mulligan aggressively with a deck running less than 18 lands, with no way to search for them, against an opponent smart enough to kill mana producers on sight before we get an engine going.

Bottom line is that you already run (or should run) far more cheap threats than the opponent can conceiivably counter during a game. Trading your your bomb for FoW and a blue card is a pretty good deal when our best cards postside are 1cc (Glimpse and Wirewood Symbiote respectively).

Also, unless you're actively overextending into mass removal Sylvan Messenger should be the last card you play out in your hand, making the glimpses pretty much a non-issue. Run Summoner''s Pact if you're that worried about them, but even so you should run enough aggro elements to be able to win without Glimpse. Conversely, I've won plenty of matches were I've restocked empty hands containing Glimpse in order to set up a big turn.

@Neil: Depends on what you want to answer with your sideboard. Krosan Grip is the go-to answer for enchantments, but Shaman is far better at dealing with artifacts and is tutorable by summoner's pact (to deal with Chalice) and can be downright obnoxious with Wirewood Symbiote if your opponent is packing artifact centric decks.

The problem I have with leyline is that I have to have in my opening hand, otherwise I have to pay 4 mana to play it. Vexing shusher can also be tutored for. The drawback is that I have to pay 1 when he counter-spells me.
