They will counter your Dark Ritual and/or Orim's Chant (Duress/Thoughtseize/Chain of Vapor).

Mental Misstep targets Orim's Chant, Xantid Swarm and Duress. If one goes unprotected, the target will be Dark Ritual. All cases will be 1 trade 1 so that this card will never be stellar against Storm, although always relevant.

Very mature response to a wrong letter typed. Nobody claims this card changes the game forever but I cannot agree to stupid shit like: "This is inferior to Needle or Counterspell"

At least is a way to answer turn 1 Vial without raping your hand with Fow. Classy card; I'll preorder a set as will probably see lot of play, though it will not be a meta changer as many wants it to be.

You can't compare it to Counterspell, obviously, they accomplish different tasks and are played in different moments of the game.

@Lemnear: Whether it's 'better' or not than Pithing Needle is irrelevant. The point sotw made was that, while this is a good card, alot of reactions in this thread are exaggerated. For what I can see, that's the main point he was making, and the point you've mussed.

    Re: [SCD] Mental Misstep

All of this "The sky is falling" nonesense is kind of familiar. Mental Misstep is very good, and it's obviously designed for Legacy. It's not an automatic four-of in every deck. In fact, I'm not sure it's an automatic four-of in anything (maybe Merfolk?).

This card isn't actually all that good against combo. Sure, it's great against High Tide, nailing their High Tides and Candelabra of Tawnos, but against Tendrils it only hits their Dark Rituals, Duresses, and cantrips. That's good, sure, and it might buy you a turn, but Mindbreak Trap, Leyline of Singularity, and the hatebears are a more effective speedbump than Misstep.

Mental Misstep does counter Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile, but decks like Goblins and Cat Sligh would rather just run more creatures than a conditional counterspell. Big Zoo might consider this, but would have to cut threats for this conditional answer.

The card is great, and it's an awesome design, but it's not Force of Will 2.0, and it's not going to break the format. That said, I'm excited about it, and it's pretty cool to see a card designed for Legacy that stirs up this much excitement.

This card is the real deal, countering Vial on the draw without wasting your whole hand is THAT good.

But this card and all the other fatties make me wonder if Reanimator couldn't make a comeback. This card make it so you don't HAVE to call white on Iona everytime you're playing a freaking three color white deck. Also the new fatties like the -2-/2 guy and the draw 7 guy could be bonkers protected by this card.

This is the exact line of thinking that lets me steam roll people. Until players realize that the power of the deck lies in absurd deck manipulation, they won't understand that countering a single spell of my choice on my combo turn is completely irrelevant.

Thanks for clearing that up. That was indeed my intention. I didn't mean to compare Needle to MM, just caricature the ridiculous hype happening in this thread. But as usual irony doesn't transport well over the webs. My bad, I guess.

Seriously, why do people have to do this? I mean, really, is there something set on stone already?
Why do people have to spike each other due to oppinions? This is probably the only Forum at the hole internet where one is able to discuss the card, and should be able to state their opinions. Why act like this?

And I'm not only talking about AngryTroll (although the name'd fit xD) he was just the last poster with such kind of argument.

This discussion can lead to real good opinions and insights. I remember Tarmogoyf being discussed the same way, the same as Lorescale Coatl. This doesn't mean anything. Nor spiking, saying it's nonsense. Was it nonsense, there wouldn't be 40+ people reading.

If you don't agree with something, why not cut short to your arguments and make yourself respectable?
If you fail to explain the reason behind your choice, technically, it's the wrong choice.

Does that mean you consider Mental Misstep on a cantrip a broken play against Storm? I agree that a nonblue player should counter your first cantrip in favor of your bait in the combo turn, but do you really think this tempo play is more scary than holding a Mindbreak Trap? A blue player with a playable FOW/Stifle in hand obviously does not want to waste a Mental Misstep on a cantrip.

    Yes.

Yes. Mindbreak Trap has the same problem of holding this for my combo turn (only scarier since it's comparatively much harder to play around (trading a card for MM is fine, but trading your hand and the game for mindbreak trap is not).

You aren't going to beat combo on their terms on their turn very often. The tempo play for the second best card in their deck and most powerful card in they can play at the moment (Brainstorm) is far more likely to buy you the time you need to turn sideways for 20 compared to hoping for interaction after they've sculpted a perfect hand.

    Re: [SCD] Mental Misstep

I think people are underestimating this card's multifaceted structure as far as functionality is concerned. The truth is, people just love "free" spells, and this fits the bill perfectly, much like Force of Will and Daze. However, Daze is a conditional spell that cannot interact optimally with an opponent on the draw. The loss of tempo Daze provides can be quite devastating in Legacy, especially on the draw when you consider a multitude of difficulties trying to get ahead with mana. Misstep does not set you back and in some instances can be a blowout when you consider an opponent could play something vital their first turn and you do not have access to Island to Daze...or even Brainstorm for Force.

Misstep does all of these things in one: it provides the element of surprise with no card disadvantage and counters a spell when an opponent puts you straight up on Force with another Blue card, or no counters at all given the colors you choose to play. That's really the only reason Daze sees play and it is fundamentally worse than Misstep given its restriction of utility before you've drawn a card and later in the game when an opponent has enough mana to pay for your Daze. This card is also going to seriously affect the overall mulligan strategy of each deck it is played in, making it far less aggressive, especially when paired with Force. Very dangerous.

I go back to what IBA had to say about this card and its association with Pithing Needle, that both have interaction on the draw. I don't believe this to be entirely accurate, as previously stated Daze requires an Island already in play to work and it sets you back a turn. Once an opponent starts accumulating resources quicker than you, the tempo advantage that was attempted to be gained is effectively all but gone. Most of the key ingredients to decks in Legacy today do in fact cost one mana, as the list goes on and on with the aforementioned posts.

My opinion is that this card is just simply the best at what it is trying to do, and that is being able to find its way into any color of deck and surprise an opponent with counter-magic when they least expect it (Belcher countering Needle, anyone?). Just look at the damn title of card; it's really not rocket-science, people.

@emidln: You're not going to be steam-rolling decks using this card as easy as you think you are in the interim; when you see an opponent drop a Taiga, Nacatl, go, you are just going to want to bust in their face before anything relevant happens as any Combo player would want to Game One against Zoo (depending on if you're running Chant or open with discard). You don't slow-roll decks like those to find what you need as Ad Nauseam becomes less and less relevant as the turns progress. This card could have a deleterious effect on your overall strategy the first game, which could be a blowout if you underestimate what your opponents have. I fully expect this card to see play in faster and more aggressive decks like Zoo. Even though it might be reactive, it stills provides decks with no real answers to their worst match-ups Game One, while being able to counter anything else like Swords or Top in the interim.

I fully expect this card to see action main-board in the next few months, and fall-out as a perfect board option post-hype. That still doesn't excuse it from being amazing, which it is.

    Re: [SCD] Mental Misstep

People smugly calling us all alarmist hysterical just don't understand what this card means. The curve in legacy is pushed absurdly close to 1. Game changing spells are most often at one, thanks to legacy's burning fast tempo, 1 CMC is the gold standard. Every single other "free" counter spell has color based conditions that either put you at big CA or tempo disadvantages. This does neither, and 2 life is pretty meaningless, meaning zoo, the rock, deadguy ale, sligh, etc...

Oh, also it's free no-strings-attached disruption and protection for every single combo deck. Thoughtseize, duress and stifle are huge anti-combo tools, and this pushes them all out
I will make use of every tool that fate presents.

    Re: [SCD] Mental Misstep

Wizards has made a mental misstep by printing this card.

Some claimed that the format will become MM deck vs. Chalice deck or MM vs Chalice vs attrition deck, but how will it affect decks that can easily drop some 1cc cards? Affinity, for example, has already been getting pretty freaking strong and it plays, what...Springleaf Drum and Signal Pest for 1cc? Signal Pest can easily be dropped to throw in Ancient Tombs and Steel Overseers. Springleaf Drum could be replaced by Paradise Mantle? Maybe. Paradise Mantle is massively weaker than Springleaf, though. Regardless, MM will inevitably cause players to avoid StP/PtE, which helps Affinity.
Perhaps Evagreen could adapt to MM without too much trouble. Drop Dark Rits for something else to help dodge MM (Lotus Petal? Or MM itself? Or just up it to 8 1cc discard?). Would it be worthwhile to play 1cc discard as your only 1cc spells with MM running around?

Would any deck adopt cards like Simian/Elvish Spirit Guide or Lotus Petal to help dodge MM while still having a turn 1 play?

No. Especially since the card is not a "taxing" counter like daze/force spike, it is straight up hard counter for anything with cmc 1 the entire game.

    Re: [SCD] Mental Misstep

As a UW/x control fan my initial thought was "wow, StP just got fisted und thus the core card of most of my petdecks" You see, as a control player resolving that StP is, more often than not, a critical situation. I love MM for its sparking lots of excitement, but I really fear for my decks' future powerlevel, as many will.

Let me exaggerate a little, to put my thoughts in a broader perspective:
MM creates fear and fear is irrational and potentially leads to irrational thinking. And I believe that very factor (not the card in a vacuum) is what will ultimately change approaches to many decks and eventually the legacy landscape.

People will consider cmc 2 spells that replace some of their cmc 1 spells. (kind of ironic that Spell Snare will suffer as well as profit from MM's existence), which might lead to a slower meta. It's kind of confusing, because free counterspells speed up the environment at the same time.

That being said, I think it's nearly impossible to make super good predictions regarding MM's impact, because there's no similar, recently printed card to compare it to - I don't believe comparing it to Spell Pierce is any good. Only time will tell..
    ---
Edit: @ greenpoe: I'm pretty sure Chrome Mox will be adapted by a wider ranger of decks to make turn 1 plays unMMable. Yep, I'm pretty sure Chrome Mox will increase in value.

Yeah but by adding acceleration, that means they can spend turn 1 playing 2 mana spells to avoid Misstep, like Swamp, Lotus Petal, Hymn to Tourach instead of Swamp, Ritual->Countered by MM.

Leyline of Lifeforce=new SB staple for Zoo.

Then that would be 4 less cards doing 3 dmg per hit.

I think it's hilarious how many ppl think this card will have a great effect on legacy.

It will see play, but there's only a limited ammount of decks that will play this card since it otherwise doesn't fit their strategy (and it's funny how many ppl think it actually fits their strategy while in fact it hardly has one or an ineffective one).

Combo-killer: hell no, not even close. for details: emidln already cleared it out fine.
