Thread: [Deck] Dredge

  1. #1981

    Re: [DTB] Dredge

So how does this Phantasmagorian thing exactly work? Does it have to be in play for its "discard three cards" to be used?

It has to be in graveyard for its ability. The common line of play is: You're on the play, you just DDD, dropping Phantasmagorian. Then, you can just discard three cards, and return him to your hand. Notice that if you have double phantasmagorian in hand, you can dump your whole hand by chaining his ability.

Congratulations 4eak! You've just taken Dredge into the next level. Mixing up Mana Dredge explosiveness and Manaless Dredge resilience.

@laststepdown I think Darkblast worked fine as the 13th Dredger, and playing 9 lands that can produce black mana, he might have killed a lot of dorks, as well.

I am glad you proved the hybrid list IS the future of viable Dredge through a blue-flooded meta.

Hey i played against this guy playing dredge today who claimed that if phantasmagorian is in your graveyard, you can stack his ability and discard your whole hand to him. Is that true? Or is this guy bullshitting me?

You have to have two of them to chain the ability. The guy is BSing you. That's what happens when people netdeck. They don't really know how things work so they make stuff up.

@4eak. Holy effin guano munching lemmings. How did we miss Phantasmagorian? This change in my Dredge list is immediate and should have been obvious--especially when I'm already running Street Wraith! Duh. Congrats on the win!

I found it interesting the 'gorian change... I was talking to a friend today, right before seing the results, how I wanted to run a "manaless" version conbined with "regular ledless" featuring firestorms and more recurring creatures, and was working on something without draws spells, but with firestorms and mana.

Switching the discards for 'gorians caught me off guard, I'm deeply interested on wether it was gamebreaker, because it seemed to me that phantasmagorian was not really necessary, although tricky.

Looks to me that, going "draw" can lead to better results already, on its own.

the "discard 3 cards" is an acrivation cost so u can discard 3 cards (ability on stack), respond to this discarding another 3 cards and so on....until you have 0 cards in hand, or less than 3 cards in hand or choose not to discard the most.

Yeah. This way you can get to 1 or 2 cards in hand including a gorian. You cant just "discard your whole hand to him". Chaining two of them gets you to one Phantasmagorian in hand. The point of gorian isn't just to empty your hand but rather that the discard is the activation cost, thus you get a great discard outlet that's immune to counters and removal.

Good job 4eak, I do like the list. Been playtesting ledless a lot lately and have noticed how common DDDing right now is cause of counterwalls everywhere. Street Wraith and gorian are great anti blue additions without stooping to the level of manaless(what a bad deck). Having 12 draw outlets + cephalid coliseum keeps the power and speed up.

Darkblast makes firestorm irrelevant. Both cards come to the same ends, but I would say darkblast is the better card for the current meta, especially against natural order and maverick.

You are embarrassingly wrong. It's a regular activated ability which can be used twice (or more if you have enough cards) by just retaining priority after each activation.

If you'll read the text he quoted and was responding to, the poster said "discard your whole hand" which isn't possible to 1 Gorian. If you DDD and pitch gorian leaving 7 cards in your hand you can activate him, retain, and activate again but will leave yourself with 1 card + gorian.

If you have 2 gorian you DDD one (7 in hand), activate pitching 2 + the second gorian and returning the original (5 in hand)... then activate the gorian again pitching 2 + gorian to have 3 cards in hand. Activate gorian one last time and your result is only having a gorian in hand.

You can't get yourself down to 0, but having 2 allows you to chain everything else relevant into the yard, where having 1 is goign to leave you with a card stuck in your hand.

So, what he said was misleading in the sense that you can dump 6 cards to 1 gorian, but in the context of what he was responding to he was entirely correct.

Grats! I was very impressed by your methodical, deliberate play. Do you ever get confused when you lay out your GY like that?
