You are confusing collectors with speculators. Collectors are trying to put together a beta set or a playset of fbb dual lands or epic misprints because they love to collect, they approach the cards the same way a coin or stamp collector would. Speculators are buying out every online store of Splinter Twin because they think it is poised to go up 3 dollars or driving to 10 Walmarts on the day a Commander set drops and buying out 30 copies of Mind Seize to sell on Ebay. They look at cards as a stock market they can understand. I'm tired as shit of the speculation and it's obviously bad for the game, artificially inflating prices and causing shortages where there shouldn't be. I mean the cards are worth money, but it's such a new jack thing to do. I mean if you're really about getting money and speculating go play the stock market and make some real coin, don't fucking nickel and dime playing cards to scrape out the occasional small time profit. Not to mention the overhead on selling MTG cards for most of these idiots pretty much eats up any profit they make. There was a lot of that going on here at one point but it died down because practically no one who isn't a real dealer breaks above minimum wage on that trifling shit. I think a lot of them engage in some creative accounting in their head to justify the time in effort they put into it but I will always be the first one to call bullshit on that as I think it is quite the fools errand. People who engage in this kind of shit talk like they are smarter then everyone else for thinking of it and talk up the rare times they hit like, "Wow I'm so smart I can't believe everyone else isn't doing this, I just bought 40 Painter's Servants at $10 now they are worth $11, I just made $40 for nothing!!!1!" As if it was that simple.
In a way though most serious Legacy players live in a grey area between player and collector, see the pimp Legacy thread for example.

Sweep the leg!
So supporting counterfeiters so you can have pretty proxies for your cube makes you not exactly the kind of shortsighted asshole I'm talking about how?
Yes it does make you the bad guy. You don't even need "lifelike" proxies for your cube, that is exactly what I'm talking about. At least if somebody wanted to play sanctioned Legacy I would understand. I mean you need real looking shit there, that doesn't make it right, but I understand. Your just being a lazy dumbass. Go buy a printer and do it yourself.
Investigative purposes... Looking to place a custom order... Holy shit I facepalmed... Where is the disconnect here and how is that investigative? Sounds like you were investigating how to give some Chinese guy money for counterfeit materials, am I right?

Glad to hear that they are stopping, but I have my doubts that this is the last we'll be hearing.
I have. I also have been studying religions for couple of years. Maybe my problem is that I know too much about it. Oh yeah and I'm baptised (not voluntarily though). If you want to debate religions with me, feel free to PM me any time.

I laughed.
Talked with a buddy from Singapore who travels to Asia often for events about this whole fake "fiasco". He says he's seen fakes every time he's gone to Japan/China. It's just something you have to pay a little more attention to. He also says that fakes have been prevalent throughout most of magic history, which is true.
I remember when I first got into Beta duals and constantly asking Matt questions on what to look for in a real card vs a fake. Was a bit scary at times, especially scary when a well known vendor calls two of your duals fake. Definitely brings an ache to your stomach. Luckily he was wrong.
Either way, It's just something I need to add to my routine when I trade.Check condition and check for fake signs. Luckily we have a list of what got printed. Use that to your advantage and only trade with people you can trust on some of the stuff that got printed. If I had a few locals randomly try and sell me goyfs, lilis, etc. When I knew they didn't have those cards prior to that moment. another sign.
I can understand why some people are worried. I was too for the first day, but I think we'll be fine... for now.
What it takes to be a pimp:
1. Knowing the right people.
2. Have the money
Not one or the other, but both.
The fastest way to become a millionare is to start with a billion dollars, then start collecting magic cards, eh? - dry cereal
The way things went is a bit too suspicious for me.
1. Wizards release the holostamp and a new font. People realize rather quickly that it's a new security measure against fakes.
2. Screenshots of "high quality fakes" suddenly become popular afterwards along with a shop.
3. Two days later, the place "was raided by the police", despite Hasbro being able to do jackshit to manufactures in China, as fake Transformers have shown.
4. Stupid masses calmed down since the "evil fake card producer" scape goat is gone and their collection is save now!
5. Hooray, time for some shitty Born of the Gods spoiler cards on Monday right on schedule!
Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but how the entire thing went considering the problematic seems way too convenient. Those guys only started to operate recently - but that doesn't explain stuff like the fake Liliana that was even good enough to fool SCG to sell it.
If anything, this whole incident just proved that both the technology and demand is there and that the Chinese fakers just need to get smarter how to distribute their fakes and fix their mistakes.
Yes, of course. But the difference now and back in 1999 is 100 USD per dual. It's no that funny. Also, I remember the old fakes, they were easily distinguishable from half a mile. These look quite better. Not to mention that the old fakes were limited to duals, P9 and similar money cards, so you didn't need to be that careful about Type II staples. With the prices we have today, even the Standard stuff is faked, as we're not talking about USD 50 per UG Madness, but more like USD 50 per one card and the fakes are spread all over the editions and formats, so good luck purchasing anything over the web.
Moreover, the number of real ABU cards is still the same over the years (better said: it's still smaller and smaller), while the number of fakes rises. Not good. Not good, if you ask me.
Why just Chinamen...?
Erm.. not really.

Guize, it's cool, don't worry. Wizards realized it didn't need to print Legacy staples b/c it could just start printing money.
The proper plural must be "hall of fames." You wouldn't say Halls & Oate, now, would you?
