It's not your hand against mine, because both players get to loot each turn. So each player still gets new card every turn, if they have something in hand.

Plus, they can still play instant removal.

This hoses so many of my decks. It does die to all the hate True-Name Nemesis dies to (and more) so it might be an awkward time for it to enter Legacy but I think it's a welcome addition to the format. Thank you, Wizards, for making it so this set has at least some meaningful contribution to Eternal.

Teferi's Puzzle Box is one step closer to a hard lock.
Draw 1 card for the turn, then put all cards in hand on the bottom of library.

Suddenly all those people looking for the Chains of Methamphetamines handlebar will have to question their faith, haha. This guy is a tad fragile but hopefully MoR/SFM help to shore that up.
    Aggro decks with Plains, rejoice!

Edit -- or maybe 'Mephistopheles hate bear' is what I meant. Thanks autocorrect

Woah this card is GOOD. Ken Nagle obligatory legacy-playable card.
Certainly will see legacy play and will establish D&T as a top tiers at least, if not make maverick be a thing again.

This guy looks pretty good but he seems quite weak against any non-blue deck (which I would still estimate on 40-50% of the metagame). Against Goblins, Maverick or Jund, this guy just gets blown out of the water. Furthermore, courtesy of TNN, he suffers from things like Golgari Charm, Zealous Persecution and Orzhov Pontiff which we will undoubtedly see a lot more in the future, making a deck like D&T just extermely prone.

However, the power against blue decks seems undeniable, but I wonder whether this card will be actual maindeck material. Very nice design however, I'm glad this got printed!

Definite maindeck material. It's pure value versus half of the format and a vanilla 3-power beater versus everything else. I would much rather have this MD and side it out for more specialized hate in applicable MU's than the other way around.

Yeah, I think that unless your meta is incredibly weird it will be a poor choice to not maindeck this guy for a while. Having game against your Elves/S&T/whatever-else matchups in game 1 is just too alluring. Even if it does nothing it has the TNN damage; it's a 3-power guy and it wears equipment just as well as anything else.

Besides, how sweet will it be to Vial this guy in when responding to draw spells. Notion Thief has a competitor for 'classiest response to Brainstorm'.

40-50%? That's cute, but far from reality.

    Source

We're at 65% Brainstorm decks right now. Include to that the 8% Elves and we're easily above 70+% hit rate, maybe even 75%, depending on the random decks.

I think the main problem with SoL (which is a pretty descriptive abbreviation for situations when it's vialed into play in response to a Brainstorm effect) is the splash hate from TNN.

This is the 2nd time I've read something like this now. I think you're overestimating the penetration of non-blue decks in the meta. If you look at thecouncil's data for December 2013, 9 out of the top 10 decks (8 blue decks + Elves) will be greatly impacted by SoL. If you want to expand it further, 15 of the top 20 decks (14 blue decks + Elves) will be greatly impacted by SoL. I'm unclear as to what data you're looking at that leads you to believe that non-blue decks account for 40-50% of the meta; all data that I've seen shows that is clearly not the case.

It would have been wayyyyy more interesting as a 2/1 for W. Or at least as a 2/2 for 1W with Flash.

At 2cmc, it's about as good as Thalia: which is to say, still very good, but against some decks not coming out early enough is relevant. Blue-based Tempo and Control decks still have plenty of ways of dealing with it (countering it, removing it, playing cantrips prior to its arrival, and/or just ignoring it outright if the game state is already favorable enough).

Ironically, I think this hoses non-blue combo like Elves and Enchantress way more than it hoses most blue decks. I also would not be surprised if, should its effect be strong enough, a UWx deck would emerge to take advantage. The effect is symmetrical, but it's not hard to build your deck in such a way and/or sequence your own plays that its downside doesn't harm you.

It does bring up the possibility of Modern's banned list getting modified, as I see no reason for a card such as Ancestral Visions being on there when Control is hardly a valid archetype, there's no Cascade guy to abuse it, and SotL exists.

It being referred to as "SOL" is kinda funny, as often this creature will make you "**** outta' luck"

Re: [Born of the Gods] Spoiler Thread

I think it's a very Legacy playable card, but it's not broken and it's not going to make blue suddenly not the best color, cool your damn jets.
It's an ok card that makes the cut in Legacy, but it's not a new, format defining card like Deathrite Shaman by any means.
You guys maybe wrong. Naturally, that is a very high bar to attain. In fact, making blue not the best color is such a giant task that it is kinda silly to ever suggest that it can be done. But this guy is clearly made with that goal in mind, and no other. Lavafrogg is looking outside of D+T and I think that is the most fertile ground, actually. For D+T to fit this card, some similar card would have to come out. I don't even know how that is going to look yet, but it is unlikely to be a 4-of in the long term. At any rate, the benefit of this card is muted in that context. I actually like this card best in Zoo or something very fast like that. This is what I am looking at, but not because I care much about Zoo. That deck bores me.

I mean that if it is priced aggressively enough to be in several different and dissimilar decks, it will fuck with blue where it hurts. No card, not even Thalia, has ever been able to do that. Once you tame Brainstorm, blue starts to look less attractive just enough to open the door for combo, especially nonblue and turn 1 combo. Interestingly, those are the exact decks that this card (and D+T, and Jund, and all nonblue decks) can't handle. You see where this is going?

It has the potential to create a true old-school aggro def control def combo def aggro continuum like Legacy has never had. I would say that makes it as big a deal as it gets.

Maybe you also play like shit and if both players are competent, the numbers even back out in favor of Miracles.

New card still doesn't do anything meaningful against TNN, so you want to Maindeck a card that makes the opponent not play his Brainstorms while he's killing you anyway with TNN and Jitte?
People do in fact run cards that aren't good against TNN specifically. For instance, other TNN.

Are you the guy who thought during spoiler season of Worldwake that JTMS is bad and FoF and Gifts are superior?^^
Yeah, but on the other hand I don't consistently struggle to beat a swarm deck while running a playset of Terminus, so I've got that going for me.
