I can't say it was an allstar since I really only made good use of it one time, but that one time definitely kept me from having a nervous breakdown. With regards to actually playable decks, I bring Slaughter Games in against OmniShow, Miracles, Sneak&Show, ANT, Lands, and surprisingly enough the mirror. Anything with an "I name this and you can't win anymore". It can be viewed as narrow hate since it doesn't really impact any of the fair decks (RIP Boil), but it's a godsend against decks that we need help against.
All I noticed was that they were shiny anime sleeves. Something particular about them or just that they're mighty fine?
As far as the Chalice change, I could take it or leave it. I've been running that setup for a while now, and it's actually worth noting that Deathrite Shaman is the replacement card. And not because Deathrite is 1cc and Chalice stops things at 1cc, after playing the deck for so long I couldn't give two shits about that in this case. The change was just coincidental. I wanted a Deathrite Shaman, and I've wanted to try out one less copy of Chalice of the Void for a while now. Chalice of course still does a great job of wreaking havoc, but we can win without Chalice and they can win despite Chalice, so having hands with multiple Chalices that would have otherwise been able to win has always been a soft spot. I can't say conclusively that it's the right thing to do, but I can say that I'm going to continue doing it for a while longer.
(Qasali Pridemage has been in the mainboard ever since I started running it. Straight swap for that original Tarmogoyf.)
Regarding sweepers: when I failed to find the second Toxic Deluge that I could swear I traded for at some point, I added a Firespout to my sideboard. I wanted something against Green and Taxes, who had previously beat me with a bunch of fliers that I couldn't answer in time. It didn't come up in this particular tournament since I only faced one aggressive deck (draw against miracles, win against miracles, win against Deathblade, win against Goblins), but I might keep it going forwards. After all, sweeping fliers while keeping my ground guys is pretty handy. Equipment is an issue, but adding another Reclamation Sage should help. To make room I cut both copies of Thoughtseize, which hasn't really been very useful to me. I might add it back in later, but for now I'm happy cutting it entirely.

Our monthly is in spain and we managed 7 people to go to represent Portugal :)
The tournament had 28 people(5 round swiss + top8) I needed some points due to missing a couple monthlys and being in the breaking of the qualifier for the final tournament.
After this one there are only 2 to go but somehow I have 0 pressure in me and am just having tons of fun.
R1 Mário with BUG Control(Packing Shamans, Goyf, Strix, Jace and lots of interaction):
We know what we are on, I drove him there, and we start playing. Our games usually end up with 2-0 or a draw since the games are quite grinding and he overthinks alot.
First game I end up with a board of Sylvan Library, Chalice@1, Liliana, Knight and Shaman by 5 turn. Pack it up and go to game 2.
Sideboard:
- 2 GSZ(due to thalia in) -1 Teeg(not sure if right) -1 Kolaghans Command -1 Mox -1 Dryad Arbor
+1 Toxic Deluge +1 Maelstrom Pulse +1 Boil +1Pyroblast +2 Thalia(shake it up a bit)
Game 2 is a grind fest, we trade my creatures for his removal+counters until he drops a Jace with no cards in hand and with me with 4 but a bit mana screw. He plus his Jace a lot instead of brainstorming a bit and the game drags on. Turn 0 of extra turns he Digs+brainstorms and drops 1 Goyf 1 Strix and 2 Shamans. GG
Record: 0-0-1 (1-1)
R2 Jorge with 4C Loam:
I got no ideia what he is on, and he starts with jund-like things(Shaman and grove), of he knows what I am on, by now I should have twisted a little but for the past 7 I brought 4C Loam.
I power through him due to knowing the guts of the deck, Prioritizing Ooze and Wastelands seems key in the mirror
Sideboard:
- 4 Chalice -1 Kolaghans Command -1 Gaddock Teeg
+1 Toxic Deluge +1 Maelstrom Pulse +1 Slaughter Games +2 Leyline of the Void +1 Charm(should have cut another mox for the extra charm)
Game 2 He starts with Leyline of the Void but I kept a 3 Wasteland hand, he managed to fetch the basic a drop a couple confidant but he never recovers against my Shaman+ooze combination. I believe he just relied to heavy on the graveyard(the problem with calling it 4C Loam)
Record: 1-0-1 (3-1)
R3 Andrés with Dredge:
I know he is on Dredge and I drove him there(where did I read this before). Game 1 I open with a t2 ooze with spare mana. 3 turns latter he concedes.
Sideboard:
-2 Loam -2 Liliana -2 Sylvan Library -1 Knight
+1 Toxic Deluge +1 Maelstrom Pulse +2 Leyline of the Void +1 Containment Priest +2 Thalia(Believe I should have brought Games for Bridges)
Game 2 He starts with t1 Therapy naming Ooze, I reveal mox, land, chalice, priest, 2 Knight, lili. I peel the land and go Mox+land and chalice@0.
He goes for a 2nd therapy and I go for priest and snowball from there.
Record: 2-0-1 (5-1)
****LUNCH BREAK****
Yummy burgers are indeed yummy
R4 Norman with Land:
I scouted a bit earlier and know he is on Lands. I believe it is a weird matchup and I lost the roll(4-1 in rolls this tourny) which I think is crucial in the matchup.
He goes with exploration +4 Ports in the first couple of turns. I concede.
Sideboard:
-1 Gaddock Teeg -3 PFire -1 Kolaghan's Command -2 Lili -1Something
+1 Maelstrom Pulse +2 Leyline of the Void +2 Thalia +1 Games +2 Charm
Game 2 I drop a Leyline first turn and he frowned a bit. after a couple of turns I have a knight and EOT activate him, he has the combo in the table and afraid of wasteland went for it, too bad Karakas is a bitch.
Game 3 I drop a Leyline again(only 2 but they are domesticated) and he has a slow start again without exploration. I go for a Thalia and do the right thing after 2 turns, drop another one? of course it goes to the grave but ends up being irrelevant since he natural combos and I got nothing.
Record: 2-1-1 (6-3)
R5 Serafin with Elves:
Hey look, another portuguese fellow. It is like we never played before. I manage to play him in all sort of bubble matches(for top8s or for drops) including a match in GP Paris.
We know each other list by hard and tested a lot.
I timely teeg in the 2nd turn a PFire my way out of the terrible 1st game.
Sideboard:
-1 Confidant -2 Loam -2 Library -2 Lili
+1 Maelstrom Pulse +1 Toxic Deluge +2 Canonist +1 Priest +2 Charm
Game 2 Opened a hand with 1 land, PFire, Confidant, Priest, Mox, Chalice, Knight. It is a bit of gamble with a high upside, but peeled the land.
Game 3 Mulled and opened a hand with 3 lands, Decay, Pfire and deluge. Peeled the grove on 3rd turn and just killed everything. We were a bit short of time but without a chance he conceded.
Record: 3-1-1 (8-4)
TOP 8 - 3 out of 7 portuguese guys in there
TOP8 "Mad" with Enchantress:
He is a fellow portuguese(*shocker*) and we trade deck instead of list just because.
It is a weird matchup that He almost needs to brick for me to win. He stomps me first game like he should and we go for game 2.
Sideboard:
-1 Gaddock teeg -1 Ooze -1 Lilis -1 Knight -3 PFire
+1 Maelstrom Pulse +2 Canonist +2 Thalia +2 Charm
Game 2 Opened a hand with 2 Libraries, 2 Decays and a couple of lands. Managed to go to 3 from my libries and never saw another spell beside a confidant(which drew me more lands)
Record: 3-2-1 (8-6)
Good tourney over all.
Pros
- Top8 and pointy points for me.
- Deck is domesticated and respects the heck out of me.
Cons
- 4/6 rounds against portuguese guys
- Kolaghan's Command is a no go, had it a couple of times and prefered almost everything.
- Missed the thoughtseizes, Didn't want to bring Therapies agains matchups like Enchantress and Elves but might have brought the Thoughtseizes.
- Never saw Boil nor Pyroblast(only 1 game that I could have seen them)
- Might flip the tables next time if I go with TES but it will break my heart
Questions and feedback, as always, are appreciated.
I actually always run 2, but the guy who lent me the one I am missing was playing with it, so I threw 3rd Liliana(Kolaghans was Replacing it for the day) instead of the 2nd Scrubland. I missed it in a couple of games when I needed the 2nd Bayou due to dredge/wasteland
"Eh".
It's mostly just the same selection of twenty-five-or-so-cards just in varying amounts. Every once in a while someone'll have an idiotic idea like trying to use Boil (effectiveness to be determined) and I can type up a fairly comprehensive list (I think?) if you want, but mostly you'll find everything you're looking for in the last few pages.
Friend and I (both are still practicing Loam) tested this list against Grixis Delver and Merfolk on Wednesday a bunch of times. Games were really swingy, especially with Merfolk. Chalice is mostly irrelevant, and key cards are Knight, Confidant, and Decay, in that order. Punishing Fire is good but sometimes outclassed by double lords too easily. If Merfolk lands double TNN, or honestly TNN with marginal back up, game is really tough. Games against Delver felt much better, but the real threat is Gurmag Angler. Only options to stop it are Knight, Liliana, and Maze.
Any tips here, either on mulling, sideboarding, or unintuitive lines of play? Running the GP main with a sideboard of:
3 Leyline of the Void
2 Slaughter Games (honestly considering bringing this in for TNN against 'Folk)
2 Ethersworn Canonist
2 Golgari Charm
2 Thoughtseize
1 Toxic Deluge
1 Engineered Plague
1 Sulfur Elemental
1 Reclamation Sage
I honestly think you're overestimating the threat that Merfolk poses. Ignoring my own personal belief that it's slightly favorable for us, True-Names (especially with back-up and especially when they're run in such numbers) can be a relevant threat in the deck, but Merfolk itself is not a threat in the meta. It just doesn't have enough numbers present.*
I also think you're overestimating the threat of Angler. While Angler can be a "woah shit!" experience since you never really expect it, its presence usually consists of "one", and the fact that you can Maze it and that you can shove a Knight of the Reliquary (that they typically can't conventionally kill) in the way means that Anger is automatically less of a threat than True-Name Nemesis.
Also, aside from Sulfur Elemental and Engineered Plague having overlapping functionality (my personal choice is Plague but I know that Elemental is a popular option), I think your sideboard is fine. Having more Ethersworn Canonist-like effects is always preferable to having less Ethersworn Canonist-like effects, but the board isn't necessarily missing anything anything. The slots in question are only the ones that vary based upon what you actually fear.
*True-Name Nemesis getting behind things in Grixis Delver is still an actually scary experience and a real possibility and is what you should actually be gearing for.
I'm not suggesting overboarding for it. My board really hasn't changed much from earlier lists: it changed the Thalia to an Ethersworn Canonist, and changed the Choke to an Engineered Plague. My question is, do you have any advice on dealing with that much up, given the available tools? It seems to crop up whenever I jam games.
Discussion time!
Better now with Dig banned?
IMO we gain and we lose. probably gain a bit more than lose more.
At this moment I am considering removing a couple of cards from the sideboard(1-2 Canonist) and improve the fair matchups.
I am actually kind of bummed that DTT is banned. I finally feel comfortable with my omni matchup (8-1 in games last night)
Probably cutting the canonists from the board in favor of something like revokers. Keeping the Teeg in the board for now.
Likely isn't a huge difference for this deck either way IMO - obviously Omnitell was something I personally struggled with but I know a lot of people had that matchup under control.
I play other legacy decks though and I HATED playing against OmniTell, so the Dig banning is fantastic from my point of view.
I'm going to go back to Jund and give it a try again. Good ol' Seismic Assault, maybe, and some Devastating Dreams. Fuck the horde.
-Matt
Is the deck too creature-lite to place a Jitte in the board?
