Wizards declaring '93/94' to be an official format, which can be played with ANY copy of a card of those legal sets, would already go a long way to slow down the current rise too. It's stupid, frankly. A few hipsters in Sweden don't want to play with Italian Legends or revised in their own private format, and the entire world follows suit.

I can't believe there are buylists for major websites out there that are buying mass quantities of City of Traitors for $110.00 each.

I mean, if you had some foresight you could have found piles of City of Traitors for $50-$60 each tops just a few months ago. If you had bought a nice chunk of them, you could turn a few thousand dollars worth of profit right now with no hassle just selling to buylists.

I didn't think City would spike AGAIN. I should have just spent every penny I had on Reserved List lands.

This cycle just repeats, with different cards, over time. If anyone wants to relive previous missed opportunities, look no further than the history of this thread. It goes back many years.

One needs just to imagine the inherent creative force of this community, a force that only needs to be chanelled into less degenerate direction than deckbuilding (which in itself debilitated into netdecking), and with this force unleashed we'd be invincible, great, and exalted for eternity. The depressive view of the GP site, where the hordes of young males, who could have been inventors, adventurers or warriors (hell, at least one of them must have in his veins at least one drop of Leonidas' blood!), but who rather perspired their fattening asses and wasted lives in such deeds of unmanly worthlessness as slinging the cardboard javelins, made me indescribably saddened and I turned away my face as bitter tears rolled down my cheeks.
Oh no! They could have been warriors! Well, I feel so bad that instead of killing people, these players are... not killing people. I'm not sure exactly what the point of being an adventurer is considering things have largely been explored; maybe it means just going around the globe having fun, but I don't see that as more productive as it's really just a way of having fun. Inventing is productive, but generally requires a specific skillset.

This whole part of your message is basically nonsense and seems to be depressed by the fact people have the audacity to... do things they enjoy in their leisure time! Oh no! The horror! I assume, therefore, that you never take breaks from anything and never relax. In fact, look at how much time you presumably spent on your lengthy post! You could've been doing something far more valuable with your time! You could've been inventing! You see how completely nonsensical this viewpoint of yours is? It's odd to find this in a post you swear was not a troll attempt.

If the complaint is more about people who are really serious about Magic to the point it's more than a hobby... well, I don't see that as particularly different from people who make a living playing any sport outside of the fact that even in the area of non-physical sports, there are places where you can make a lot more money than playing Magic (e.g. Poker, Chess).

I idly imagined one of our mighty and brave forebears, now buried by time and dust, who through some miracle of either metempsychosis or time walk would be able to behold how the terminal stages of his once proud people express themselves in his posterity. And it's natural that it was exactly Sparta (not limited only to the three hundred men immortalized in their bravery and famous even to the illiterate ones thanks to the recent Hollywood spectacle), a polar antithesis of modern degeneracy, what came to my mind while I observed the untold horror of GP.
Those societies that were the "polar antithesis of modern degeneracy" sucked to live in compared to today's world. It's a good thing we don't have to live in that kind of society anymore. It's easy to wax nostalgic about a harsh military dictatorship you never had to live under.

All of the modern conveniences and technologies of today have essentially made it so you can accomplish the same basic amount (if not more) as people did back then while not having to spend as much time on it, leading to great leisure time. "Modern degeneracy" has led to significantly greater advances in a decade than people in Sparta did in a much longer period of time.

I mean, your message did have a lot of valid points otherwise... but this part of it was so completely absurd I had to take issue with it.

Ordinarily I would have just shrugged and figured it was meant to be exaggerated for dramatic effect, but then you posted basically the same thing in another thread, so it looks like you were actually serious about this.

I have no idea why this is coming up in a thread about reprints, but Lord Seth here just touched on one my pet peeves: people waxing nostalgic about the old days where men were men and women lived to the ripe old age of died in childbirth.

We owe a TON of our cultural understanding to the Greeks, and two concepts from them are at play here. The first is the whole "macho man" mentality -- kind of odd when you also consider that gay relationships were part of their romance -- which they used to differentiate themselves from what they saw as the soft and effeminate Eastern powers they dealt with and sometimes made war against. The second is the narrative arcs we are familiar with - basically everything you learn about fiction stories in English class in high school? The tragic fall? The climax? The heroic narrative? Yeah, pretty much all Greek ideas. The Romans adopted these ideas of machismo and the same narrative structures, and the European powers afterwards absorbed them somewhat from the Roman Empire as they assimilated it's Western lands and later actively learned about it as the classics were rediscovered and studied in the Renaissance.

I bring this up because it gives a lot of context to my main point: the concept of a past when people were less soft and more rugged, of a lost Golden Age, are anachronisms. Antiques. They are ways of understanding the world that are partly the propaganda of successful ancient civilizations. They speak to us because we're still steeped in their culture. On top of that, these ideas make a lot of sense in a world where, if you neglected to keep your army strong and your population rugged, the wandering nomadic tribes next door would just come in, murder everyone, and replace you. The idea of a past "Golden Age" could be literally true in the eras (before Modern times) when civilizations rose and fell, riches being produced mainly by civil engineering, success in war, and good harvests. Technological progress in the ancient world was a sine wave more than anything else.

None of these concepts have much meaning for us since the Industrial Revolution. We've replaced the rise and fall of states with a new historical norm: the steady rise of technology. Newer armies do not lose to older armies anymore. Life spans have increased. Communication has increased. Even those at the bottom rung of society in modern first-world countries enjoy a level of security that blows the lowest tiers of past societies out of the water. Things are better now than they have ever been, and we should all be deliriously happy to not have been born earlier than we were. I suppose we should be annoyed we were not born LATER, but, eh.

I'm sure civilizations will continue to rise and fall, but if you noticed, the last two World Wars did not result in a pillaging horde of Mongols wrecking everyone's empires and bringing us back to pre-industrial times. Even if "the bad guys" win a major conflict, technology will march forward. The human race has exploded into an upward trajectory that nothing short of a truly Earth-shattering cataclysm can derail now. There will certainly be challenges in the future, but the age of the Greeks and Romans is dead, and it will take an asteroid or thermonuclear holocaust to bring it back again.

Our Golden Age is now and our next Golden Age is tomorrow, in perpetuity.

Bed. Your post was well written and I think hits the nail on the head. Thanks.

You can't declare '93/94' to be an official format if you want chaos orb to be played. I don't really care about what those hipsters say, not gonna sell all my fbb duals to buy WB unlimited ones.

Then ban the two dexterity cards. The main idea is that you'd allow people to play Magic like it existed in the beginning. The fact that the 'most official body' that has presented a ban list of this format is a bunch of guys in Scandinavia because they thought of it first, gives credence to their view. Whether you'll sell your fbb or not to get UL lands, fact of the matter is enough people will, and that drives up the price. Look at the price evolution of duals: it's the UL copies which have risen most in their price. AN Serendib Efreet quadrupled in 2 years, despite being unplayable in any format it's legal in. The functionally identical revised copy is still fodder in many long forgotten boxes of old cards chaff.

Taking over the 93/94 'format' won't fix the current price explosion, but it'll slow it down somewhat.

as far as Im aware thats not true at all, in a vast majority of both in US and EU tournaments outside of Sweden the puristic form is not required at all, some people just want to step up their game in way of foil/languages like in other formats due to higher awareness and playability of the format in last years... It would 0 impact the price and I doubt that swedes would give a shit about making it "official" anyway...

93/94 is a more legitimate format than EDH will ever hope to be, anyway.

Yeah, the gag is probably lost on someone who understands German. If you didn't know, that's a scene from the movie Downfall, and a common joke on the Internet is to take it and put fake subtitles on it to have it be a rant about something silly, sort of like when people take a comic and put in different dialogue. Unfortunately, if you actually understand German, it probably loses a lot of the comedy because you know what they're actually supposed to be saying.

I am well aware of the movie and also about the scene often being taken for these kind of videos for random rants because of the intensity of acting and the ridiculous way of speaking, which some people still think today is how german is supposed to sound.

The joke however gets lost if you hear/see more than just the aggressive yelling and the acting of Bruno Ganz with the freedom to interpret what he actually said :p
