Whipporwill, I like your style! :wink: Definitely keep an eye out for the Japanese Renaissance CoBs They're pretty pricey though - $30-50 range last I checked. Japanese 6th Diminishing Returns might also be a consideration.

Put feelers out, as I am only interested in trade right now, and ended up picking up a played Bayou for a decent price. Need to work out the rest; I might just cash in a ton of bulk, etc. and clear out some of them from SCG.

Yeah, I have worked with Ben in the past to bring stuff to events (how I got my Beta Timetwister, among various other nice things), so I figured I would contact him about working something out and meeting up at the Invitational in Indy next month, since that is the only time they are really coming anywhere close to here the rest of the year. I am definitely going to stay away from NM and probably try for SP on everything and upgrade any stragglers later.

Starting to finally acquire high end legacy and vintage staples and was curious.. I notice most people are posting their high value stuff double sleeved. Do most store them double sleeved or in binder pages?


I double sleeve the legacy decks I play but end up putting the rest in binders.. am i better off just keep the rest double sleeved in a card box instead?

If you put them in a box, definitely double sleeve them.

For the binder (which I'm now moving to) - the side loading pages are really nice, but you should definitely have at least a perfect fit on the card. I've found that putting double-sleeved cards into these binders results in the pages being bigger than intended which makes the inner sections of the firt few and last few pages bend a big.

Glad everything got there safe. I'll be seeing Mark Poole again at Illuxcon I considering going for quad-signed stuff but I think it irritates him to have to signed over his own art. Menges has an awesome signature and he does a nice job. Brom for being an epic level iconic fantasy artist has kind of a turd for a signature; but alas he signed a metric ton of shit -- so much so the ink pen died on whienots Mogg Fanatic(s).

At some point you need to eStalk the Seattle area artists and show up at their houses with cards, ink pens and donuts.

It wouldn't have happened. I only had one day there, and the artists are super busy. They are selling shit, meeting with other art people, teaching seminars, giving portfolio reviews, etc.. I didn't get everything I brought signed, I only caught Mark Zug once and he was limiting signing. Most artists are pretty generous with their time given it's an art show with a few MTG idiots prowling around, not a game convention with a few artists. Example, Justin Sweet was painting all day Saturday pretty much. Anyway, if I wasn't up there already I wouldn't have gone but it was worth the detour.

I was suprised to see no Hildenbrandt stuff in your pictures. To me he was probably the biggest draw artist wise. All the artists were great though some did seem annoyed when asked to sign. Poole, Laubenstein, and Rayyan were some of my favorites to talk to.

He may have been more accessible on the other days, on Saturday he was doing this massive chuckie looking painted and his wife was fending off anyone walking up with cards. So I got fucked. My priorities were getting him to sign 4 x Vial, 4 x russian bridge, 4 x GGT. Rebecca Guay signed quite a few for me after I offered to buy her lunch.

Dick is strong. I'd say aloof. He had his parents there, and a little couch in his booth with fucking apple wine and other velvet covered fucking bullshit. He started signing and said he'd sign those and then see how he felt; then he got wrapped up talking about the purpose of free will with respect to Zoroaster's ball sack. I mean fuck take $40 from me go buy some weed from one of the hundred fucking shady thugged up drug dealers within a block of the shit box fucking museum. Then he wasn't at his booth, then he was dicking around. I mean it's an art convention, not a game convention. Had I had 2 days I'm sure I could have gotten everything signed by going by multiple times but it was a free side trip given I was up there for work anyway.

But as I play mainly in a 10 proxy environment it doesn't really matter. First priority for me is a nice beta Fastbond and demonic. For duals I first was on Fbb but finally find that unlimited ones are much more smarter (color and big writing) so I sold all of them. Beta duals are out of price for me.

@quasimoff: glad to see that you appreciate the brainstorm, they are so hard to find in good shape even in France :wink:

I've been working on my ANT deck, which I'm planning on playing at GP DC in November. I don't know if it'll be done by then, but it'll hopefully be close.

Everything main deck is Japanese (non-foil, since if you can't go 100% foil what's the point?) except for dual lands (german white border) and 14 cards (the 3 basics, 1 gemstone mine, 4 polluted deltas, 4 infernal tutors, 1 ad nauseam and 1 tendrils of agony). The basic islands are actually done, but are in another deck for reasons that currently escape me, and the last gemstone mine is in the mail, so that'll bring me down to 11 main deck cards left. I'm not actively working on the sideboard at the moment, so that's still all english except for one dual and a cabal therapy.

The long term plan is to expand this into an entirely japanese (where possible) "box of storm", which can be played as either ANT, TES or Belcher. I've got parts of TES and Belcher either done or in the mail, but like the sideboard those aren't being actively worked on until I finish the main deck of ANT, since that's the version I intend to play in DC.

I'd probably go with summer for the color saturation being quite a gem. I know you're in the works of picking up some other textless 4th basics, is one of the islands your favorite art?

You can German out most internet legacy decks. Something you can't say about jap/chinese/korean/russian ... especially if you don't like playing with foil-ghi-oh cards. Ice Age forward, plus Revised gets you essentially everything unless you are rocking Forcefield or Lich. Italian has slightly more coverage because of Legends but Italian Legends is so ghetto it waters everything down.

Well, yeah -- I don't look down nor disagree with people who go foil Asian -- I do it because I like the look and I can get stuff relatively cheap, but when people have to go foil Japanese/Korean because people view European languages (except Russian) or English as inferior, that is what I meant when I made that "overrated" comment.

On jap/chi (and also kor) cards:

I started to use them because asianBB 4th Ed. cards are much cheaper then Beta and I like their design more (I started during 4th Ed.), so for me it was a win-win scenario, as I saved money and had the cards I liked. As the time goes, I started to dislike them a bit, because:
a) using asian languages means I will never have my decks completely jap/chi (not to mention kor) and this makes them far less nice. (And no, I won't be using the alters; I don't like them, moreover WotC may change their policy on alters right tomorrow, and I'm not willing to sit on unplayables.)
b) when I'm missing asian money cards and use just some random crap like Ponders and Spell Pierces, the deck basically screams "Look at me, I'm cheap!"... esp. if I don't even have it in one and only language. For a while I even thought I'll return back to English-only and I really start to consider it being the most pimp.

Also, I'm not really fond of design mixes, so I'd favor if WotC finally abandon the RL and I may buy modern-framed Forces and duals, moreover japanese. Otoh, I don't need duals for my casual deck and whenever I play Tempo Thresh, I'm surprised how very little attention I pay to the languages/frames/condition of my cards (with the only thing that really matters to me being BBs, because mixed borders look incons... ugly), so if all my "pimp" happens on some weird level of petting with cards when I'm not playing, I may just as well cease to care...

Personally, I think there are appealing aspects to many different types of "pimp" magic cards.

For example, my storm (and vintage) stuff is in Japanese when possible because I find the script aesthetically appealing. My dual lands are (mostly) WB german because I like the FWB cards and find the german translations of those words interesting (Mangrovensumpf is just more awesome than Bayou). I like a well done alter, and when I was actively playing EDH I spent a fair amount of effort hunting those down for my decks. Finally, there's just something to be said for the rare stuff, Alpha/Beta/Summer/weird missprints/whatever. They're all awesome in their own way. Heck, I'm totally not a fan of signed cards, but if that's what turns your crank then go for it, and even if it's not my cup of tea I can totally appreciate when Markers posts one of his epic complete signed sets here.

I guess what I'm saying is to each their own, and I'd hate to see someone stop posting their stuff here because someone else thinks it's not awesome enough. There's a lot of awesome stuff out there, and part of what makes it awesome is the dizzying variety of cards that people find appealing. All of this is a matter of opinion anyway, it's not like your korean crimped miscut smokestack is going to magically make me sacrifice more permanents or something, but that doesn't mean it isn't cool.

A few posts back someone mentioned that they were making their ANT deck all Japanese but their basics were still English (for shame, sir...) and I thought I'd post part of my foreign basic land collection. These are all 4th edition Korean, Japanese or Chinese language basics - in black border, of course - that I've picked up over the years. It's only part of the 4th ed Asian language collection (about 80 others are a little too bent to play in competitive decks so they're set aside flattening out).

I started working on foreign-ing out my Legacy staples a few months ago, and have made some decent progress. I've never liked foils (light sensitivity means that non-matte sleeved foils are an eyesore for me) so foreign cards are a nice substitute. I'm not really a purist regarding languages (Japanese is the most aesthetically pleasing IMO, but I also like German, Russian, and occasional cards in other languages). Hopefully I'll be able to put some stuff up here soon. I doubt I'll ever have a 100% foreign deck because I can't handle the cost of FBB duals right now, but it might get close.

EDIT: I've also sworn off pimping fetches - at least until a mass reprint - because of skyrocketing costs.

The Chinese OD Island is foil, and is one of my favorite pictures for the Island. It's hard to see. I got the UG Plains signed myself at Nat's 2004 in KC. Also had Quinton Hoover draw a Juzam Djinn on my bag in silver, and now he has passed away. I wonder how much that's gonna be worth, or already is...

The issue is whether or not judges check. I had the judges sleeve my deck before going into the Top 8 at SCG, but they told me to sleeve the duals myself since they didn't want to damage them and have me give them a brain hemorrhage.

Also, me admitting to this would be admitting to cheating in sanctioned Magic, so no, no I have not done this.

It's about 10 betas now and another 35 ish FBBs. Then about 20 assorted CEs.

I think it would have a bigger impact in Vintage as the % of vintage playables in the CE/IE sets is way higher. I also think it would save them from eventual destruction, since inevitably they'll all end up in Italy, get rebacked and end up on eBay.

IE/CE power might end up being worth more than unlimited power actually if it were legal. IE/CE duals would almost certainly be worth more than revised/ul duals (I think there are less). With double face cards there really isn't a compelling real reason to not make them legal. The corner thing is the same as any other marked sleeve issue - you can't tell unless you are cheating which you can already do with alpha.

I would love to see them legal and I own beta / alpha power ... it would mean a surge in sanctioned vintage which is good for Magic.

Because I'm pretty active in the italian Mtg community and I didn't hear anything about fakes/rebacks in years. if something big happened (like a stash of rebacked crap ends up on ebay) I would have been aware of it.

Half ass, half memory. In the early 2000's (2002) there was quite a bit of bad auction rebacking from Italy. Like 3-4 a month, on eBay. All my CE stuff (2 complete, 1 incomplete signed) with the exception of a very few things all went to Italy when I sold it on eBay. I even saw a signed Tundra (CE) come back a month later on eBay as a beta. It had the same silver ink blot.

Not to say there aren't complete fucking crooks in all nations. Now I think we'll slowly see less destroying of these cards

a) CE's are actually worth something so mutilating them is less attractive

b) eBay is just always going to side with the buyer

c) People understand fakes better

but I suppose this is all bumped up against the insane price of actual beta duals so maybe it'll even out. I just wish WotC would legalize them, I thought for sure flip cards were the vehicle they'd use to do this since it's just as easy to cheat with those.

On the other hand, those Bobs are still one of the most gorgeous sets of signed cards I've ever seen.

The hair somehow got on the card when I took the picture. It's like nothing I ever do in my house can get rid of the dog hair that seems to fly around my house and land in places I don't want it :eek:.

Posted a while back, but there was a 1-2 year period where you couldn't play alphas unless your deck was mostly (or all in some stringent cases) all alphas. If you had alpha power this was a big deal. I've seen alpha cut force of wills, DCI disenchant and a few other weird examples. Remember you couldn't use opaque sleeves until after or around Urza block? I can't quite remember, but I know I railed and ranted heavily for their legalization back in the day on the lists and usenet. Mostly because the disparity in color on the backs of Mirage vs. Revised was so glaring it made alpha corners moot.

Edit: I railed *after* they banned Alphas. Prior to that I actually wasn't in favor of sleeves because the sleeves of the day were penny sleeves which clumped very badly and you couldn't really riffle them. Opaque sleeves became legal on 10/1999 ...

I agree that mixing borders doesn't usually look good and getting it all modern-framed may be a way to go, but you are playing FNM gitaxian probes, modern masters empty the warrens, m10 ponders, gp promo chrome moxes... That's not pimp, even if you go for new borders.

Since i dont play legacy i will never understand it, but maybe is the answer so obvious that i dont get it:
Why you mostly buy foil fetches and f.e. korean foil thoughtseize/foil ponder/foil unhinged land but dont buy beta duals? Instead i mostly see rev or fbb ger/ita etc that costs like 4-5 times the same, where beta would cost i guess 10x as much as a revised?
Like if the money is short, i would wait until i have those beta tbh :)


Well, it's not only that a Beta underground sea price is the same as the price of a playset of FBB underground seas (which would be similar to the difference between a mercadian foil brainstorm and a FNM brainstorm), but also that this price is +800€. Not everyone is willing to pay that amount of money for a single card. And obviously, the visual difference between beta underground and fbb underground is smaller than the visual difference between foil mercadian brainstorm and fnm brainstorm.
Also, as someone already said before in this thread, having a foil deck with revised/fbb duals is semipimp, but having a non-foil english deck with A/B duals is just +50 normal cards along with some high value card, which isn't a pimp deck.
This is why I think most the people starts pimping the non dual-land cards.


In modern i can foil all "duals" but i like to play with beta basics and would likely have a beta swords and bolts :(


I prefer old borders, but when I play modern I use Terese Nielsen's swords, newborder lightning bolts and unhinged or zendikar basics.
I think it has more sense (unless you can have many more old border cards in the deck, which doesn't seem to happen in modern).

The pimp police are out in full force today. I like the FNM probes personally. I disagree on the chrome mox and burning wish, but to each his own. I can see what you are saying about borders matching. Also core set ponder is much cooler than random merfolk swimming around

b2t: i like the ger set foil flooded strands and scalding tarn, pretty hard to find, even in germany.
Because the value is so fucking high on beta.

You don't start out by pimping the most expensive stuff, but work your way up. Some of these decks is worth close to 10k$, WITH fbb instead of beta. That price can easily be doubled if you want beta sea's/beta volc for instance.

Also, beta are really hard to find good looking ones, and that is what matter most.
