You can do the same process with a strong UV light machine, commonly used for sterilizing biological samples that are used in experiments or for building biological constructs. I'm pretty sure there would have been enough time since M12 came out for that to happen.

I've posted about this before with regard to burn frames used in the printing industry. You can use filters to single out parts of the light spectrum. Although I've never experimented (as most modern shops no longer use film because of direct-to-plate technology), I'd imagine putting a card in an exposure frame with a long duration and a color filter could render some interesting results. Someone should experiment. Seriously, a 5 minute exposure may start a fire, that's how intense the light is in these devices (not really as you are burning plates pretty much all day long without any fires).

I'll check it out. I'm sure well placed tape over the cards can protect certain parts of the ink, and android's suggestion with EM spectrum filters would probably also work (but much harder for me to get access to filters like those). I've got a bunch of crappy cards ready to be thrown in there when I get a chance (and when no one is around, I doubt the other people in my friend's lab like to see their sterile environment used for magic card color changing:tongue:).

Also I'd imagine black would stick around longest if just the card was thrown in there.

Tedin has a nice sig, but I don't like where he places it on the card. When I got a bunch of stuff signed by him a few months ago I asked him to sign the card at the bottom below the rules text which he did with out a problem. He just defaults to the middle of the card if you don't ask him, which compositionally looks odd to me.

Yeah with lands you just prey on aggro and especially control. Combo is a lost cause with that deck lol unless you dedicate a ton of your SB to the MU then it's winnable.

I had my deck basically that pimp, and then sold most of it, because the deck is unplayable with the amount of Misstep in the format. (And Meddling Mage, to be fair)

Relative to this point what, if any, are the reasons to prefer Beta over Alpha? I fairly sure that Alpha is rarer in terms of print run, but I almost alway see people trying to track down Beta versions of cards. Is this simply due to scarcity or is there another reason for this trend?

Beta cut is usually preferred over an Alpha cut because Alpha corners are too rounded and don't blend with the rest of the cards in the deck.

Also, you usually just refer to Alpha/Beta versions of cards as "Beta," as there's more of them/they're cut like normal. Many people don't care or prefer Alpha or Beta or Beta over Alpha, some hate Alpha, and some hate Beta.

I personally prefer Beta, but I don't hate Alpha. If I can pick it up for the right price, A/B is fine.

Against 43 Lands, you have less card that you can counter (assuming you're the opponent, and you're playing Blue) as opposed to playing Stax. Stax gets blown out by the all-in turn 1 Trinishpere which get's FOW'd, then you Wasteland their Tomb. :P

Yeah, as others have said, Beta is when the shape of the card first became the current shape.

Alpha cards had more rounded corners than Betas and thus could conceivably be considered marked cards. Really though, as long as you're playing in sleeves (and if you're not with Alpha/Beta...), you're ok, but that's why Betas are more coveted than Alphas (although again, there's not a huge price difference if at all on most cards).

There was a negative stigma towards Alpha cards originally because they were not legal for tournament play because of the rounded corners. Even after they changed the rule allowing you to play them in sleeves that negative stigma lingered and Alpha cards were generally worth less than Beta. That has slowly changed and now Alpha is generally worth more than Beta due to the lower print run.

There is an argument to make perhaps that since Alpha was banned for tournament play during a time when people didn't play with sleeves that Alpha cards are in better condition as a whole and thus mint Beta could be more rare, or just as rare as mint Alpha. I have no way to substantiate that claim but I'd be interested in hearing from collectors if they have noticed that anecdotally.

I just picked up a Beta Lotus last week. Would have preferred alpha but BB lotuses are getting more and more difficult to find and I was happy with the price and condition of the one I got and went for it.

Personally I prefer Alpha and kind of like the rounded corners, but both are pimp and there is no problem with mixing A/B in the same deck. My Type 1 deck has both and unless you look at the card closely you don't even notice different corners.

Yeah, I will never buy from that guy's eBay store even if he's got the lowest price (this pretty much never happens though).

The most frustrating thing for me is all of his auctions allow you to make an offer... but he'll never come down more than a couple cents on any particular auction. Annoying. I've had him send me snarky messages back saying "I know how much stuff is worth" and such when I've put in an offer maybe a dollar lower than the lowest BIN listed.

I find it interesting that SCG will sell Beta Seas in MP condition that are in as good or possibly a little worse condition than the cards on eBay, but is only asking $900. SP are only $1,000. ABU and Dan Bock are asking at least $200 to $300 more on some of these cards in relatively the same condition.

I'm not trying to rep out for SCG by any means, but I do find the market difference really interesting.

Despite SCG having high prices and following the speculating bubbles on hot cards, they actually have some the best prices on certain power cards and BB duals. At least they are much better than the BIN prices on ebay for most of that stuff.

Anyone buying power or anything of value from Dan Bock would either have to be insane or a total idiot when you can just to go SCG and buy a better conditioned card for less money. Plus I wouldn't want him using my money on his power9 vanity plate...

I dont know, as the MTG customer base gets older they will have more money and want to collect older cards. I think when the 20 year anniversary hits the prices of lotuses is going to increase significantly. Everyone is going to want a piece of the history of the game and Lotus, maybe Ancestral is where they are going to look to. This is just my speculation of course.

It's pretty F'd up when SCGs has the best prices on Loti. Basically all the people on Ebay are just looking to milk as much out of the card as they can. So far those cards don't seem to be moving. But eventually they might.

Honestly SCG prices used to be on the high end, recently I've noticed they sell very close to market value. Of course they will always be higher than ebay completed listings but not by very much. It saves plenty of time and hassle to just buy from them. Ben from SCG is also a really great guy (from PMs and the sort) and very accommodating.

ABU on the other hand has some of the fastest shipping and handling of any store I've bought from. Grading is excellent, even on SP cards. ABU is always overpriced (I usually expect 20-25% or so) but when you are looking for an obscure foil that is out of stock everywhere, ABU is the place to go. They are also a couple of steals here and there.

It looks sort of like Dark Beta to me, but I would have to see it in person or see it next to another Beta artifact to be sure. It could just be the scan. I have a Dark Beta Jet right here, and it looks much worse on the front than that Sapphire does, but quality varied from one card to another. The back resembles my Dark Beta Jet a LOT, more than it does the Beta Plowshares I dug up to compare it to. Show it to a real dealer at an event and see what they say. Or, if you want, you can mail it to me and I can verify it.

I deem that EDH deck "the Wallet Raper". lol Seriously, that must have took a while to put together and a large chunck of paycheck no less. Very Nice indeed. Especially the Foil Japanese Akroma's Memorial, bet that was an oucher. Good touch on the basics too.

I'm not sure that Memorial's in the top 10 most expensive cards in either deck, to be honest. SCG's had them at 75 for a while.

I'm looking at picking up a Beta Underground Sea this weekend in Slightly Played condition. The price range will probably be around a $1,000. Thoughts on if that is a good price?

I paid a little over $900 on Sea. Its close to SCG prices relative to the condition. The big thing on purchasing a Sea was I did not want shuffle creases on the card as the prime criteria for condition. The whiting, while noticeable, is not bad by any means. I purchased it from a local tournament organizer over the weekend. I may have overpaid a little... However, unless I could trade into one, I wanted to purchase it locally to support the B&M stores/event organizers if at all possible. After doing extensive research with shops throughout the state, this was one of three that I could locate. Concerning the other two, one owner was not interested in parting with his and the other wanted close to $2,000 for it.

The person who sold me the card is an awesome guy. He was telling stories of Beta drafts at GenCon in the early 2000s. He played without sleeves for the sake of nostalgia since ten years prior, he was drafting Magic at its first release at GenCon. He did tell me that he wasn't playing Blue or Green so he put the Tropical Island he drafted into a hard case for safe keeping. (Which will be my next target after I acquire another Beta Sea).

I decided to sell my Korean cards (Duress, Lotus Petal, and Ill-Gotten Gains) in order to go all in on Japanese cards. I would rather have everything Japanese as opposed to a mix. I've had a growing feeling over the past several months that continuity of language is more appealing to me than rarity.

I am somewhat torn on cards like Hurkyl's Recall which I can get FBB Japanese or original set. As a general rule, I tend to favor first set printings of a card over latter ones (Ponder is the exception because the Lorwyn artwork is terrible in my opinion). If the earliest set in which a card is available had a Japanese printing, I would prefer the Japanese version to the English one. However, Antiquities never had a Japanese set run, but the appealing factors for the Japanese version is that its black boarder and it has the original artwork... decisions, decisions....

I just finished listing most of my Legacy collection on eBay; mostly Japanese (non-foil) and Korean cards.

I did so because I've arrived at a decision regarding my future pimp efforts; I am planning on using the money I net and invest it toward upgrading my Vintage cards from Unlimited to Beta. Included under this goal is acquiring some additional Beta dual lands. I no longer have the time or desire to continue playing Legacy on a regular/competitive basis and have found myself more attracted to Vintage over the last several months. I still have friends that are willing to let me borrow cards for Legacy if I want to play.

I've watched too many people over the years sell their collections only be dismayed when they attempt to get back in because of the escalating price. I think investing in some Beta will be a good way to protect my collection and would allow me to buy back into Legacy if I wanted to at some point in the future.

I will of course post things as I acquire them here.

Don't feel too bad. My local store was cracking packs to stock innistrad and opened one pack that contained a foil snapcaster, a garruk, and a liliana. No joke. Now THAT is the definition of lucksacking. Then again foil liliana is probably worth quite a bit just like a snapcaster foil is right now.

Nice damnation's though. Just normal ones are close to 20 apiece now; just getting ridiculous how expensive damnation is getting.

Yes I have. Russian Postal Service sucks and the card grading was not that good. Besides this I received all the 1xx cards I ordered. The main point is that they accept paypal while most of the other Russian shops want strange methods of online payment (iirc).
Also ... do it yourself :P

I've bought from them before. It was slow just because of shipping, but they were good to deal with. Everything shipped as marked and prices were ok. It's been the best place I've found for Russian. My Russian, Avon signed full art Zendikar lands are pretty cool.

Honestly have no idea who's sig it is. Ive got like 5 foil etutors so I just took the sigged one and shoved it in the deck. I'm not a fan of some stuff like fnm brainstorm and ftv top. My original foil ones are in my legacy deck unfortunately. Cant be assed getting the 5th for Edh.

That Russian stuff is VERY nice. I've been putting off finishing my Russian Dark Confidant playset due to Beta duals, unforts.

But, I finally finished my Uncommons for my Beta Set. I've had an Alpha Demonic for so long, but I finally (literally, 2 years since I got the Alpha) got a very nice Beta one for a reasonable price.

Now, only 14 more rares. Huzzah!

Also, I don't think I said that I also just got 2 Chains of Mephistopheles, 4 Foil Swords, and 4 Foil Dark Confidants :)

I know people hate Rob Alex alters on fetches/duals, but personally I'm a huge fan of the black marker comic-style on the cards as long as they fit the art. At least he wasn't doing that in a rush, so it looks nice :)

EDIT: While I'm posting here, what is the standard for miscut pimp?

I know that if a card is just slightly miscut it's not considered pimp because that's fairly normal (esp for older cards). How much of the ratio of miscut (normal cards being 1:1 ratio) would qualify towards being pimp? I am inclined to say that if the ratio is (1:4, i.e. 1 part top to 4 parts bottom) that is pretty miscut. If a card is miscut showing 2 cards, that's definitely a miscut. Just wondering to all the miscut collectors out there :)

for some people maybe a rape of those beautiful seas, but for me these are uberpimp!
the hottest seas i´ve seen so far.

but i have one thing to mention: it would be better if all were a or b or at least 2/2, i dont like non-symmetric distribution within a playset. but lets not talk about details.

I got to agree with Nestor. I also like uniform (or evenly split) a/b playsets are a bit more.
