There are quite some of those out there - I am sure you will be able to find one. The more miscut versions are either Elspeth/Elspeth or Elspeth/Tezzert.

I'm assuming you want to find grim monolith with tutors, use zur to fetch power artifact, then combo off?

It's pimped out in order of value for the most part. I want it to be Summer, Jap Foil, Korean, Beta in that order. The English cards are just not done yet.

Some, like the ponder, are just neat, but will likely be replaced with Jap Foil.

Here's my version of Zur. It's pretty straightforward. Control the board and slam Zur to take over the game. Grab Necro and it's GG once you get Confinement + a Bunch of Counters to protect it. Absolutely minimal chaff enchantments (in 1 vs 1, you can cut alot of useless crap). Land destruction is also pretty underwhelming in 1 vs 1 where Necro + a ton of counters usually does the trick as well.

Hahaha I'm too lazy to fix my no 5s. I usually have 5 of staples so I can run it in my edh deck without switching. I guess its pretty stupid to have 5 fbb tundras etc. Summer is insane. I saw a sol ring at the lgs for 1.2 k usd a year ago. Some guy flew in from Singapore and snapped it up before I could even get into the store to check it out! Grrr.. I guess that was a steal!

You just have to search for them piece by piece. Unlikely that you'd get someone who has that many of one island and is willing to sell.

@above: 1.2k is definitely low, and I would have bought it without hesitation at that price. I've personally picked up 1 at slightly less than a grand and another at about 1.8k, the latter within the last year.

At Legacy GP's, you can usually find the one or two people in the room carrying Summer stuff. I'd also, if you're really searching, hand out buylists to dealers so they keep an eye out.

Or, you can go around the event hall like I did at Providence yelling at people to give me their Beta duals. It did work.

I do not know of anyone beside that one which got scanned. There is a bunch (10-15?) of those german text / french copyright testprints and some appear to be incredibly rare (maybe unique) while others at least exist in numbers higher than 1.
Also if it pops up anyone will have hard times competing with other high rollers on the island/dark ritual testprint because it is the most playable/iconic card iirc.

Honestly, the reason I play beta lands is because I wanted to be able to read all of my cards. Foreign cards have never done much for me. The forces are a recent edition that I really dig because they are sloppy and look hand drawn. I've never been a fan of printed kanji, so the forces really just appeal to my eye.

Pimping is in the eye of the beholder after all.

These cards are definitely not unique, and exist in decent quantities, as far as rarities go. Unfortunately, this still means that they are incredibly difficult to find on the buyside, but don't/shouldn't command prices reserved for rarer items. I mean, I have been offered some really good prices for some of my things, higher than what I think the fair value is, but it will take some outrageous offers (think of something like 5digits before I even consider selling stuff like the test foil EE), and that kinda highlights the disparity caused when all prices are on the buyside.

And yeah, I will be competing quite seriously on any of these that pop up. It's pretty much one of the few things I need for my dark ritual and island collections.

Haven't really contributed to this thread for some time. Give me a while, have some really nice stuff sitting with me. A couple more deals to close out, and there's a good chance I beat my last serious scan (which contained a summer serendib + hurricane).

If you know anything about the aesthetics of Chinese/Japanese characters, then you'd know that good handwriting is incredibly important on anything written/painted (part of culture and even shows higher class in society). Having someone who is not Asian or does not specifically write Chinese/Japanese calligraphy alter a card into one of those languages is probably a huge mistake. If you show them to anyone who could read them, they'd probably fall over laughing at those forces. They look like a 1st grader wrote them with finger paint.

Well, the owner of our local store and I have been very good friends for a lot of years. It goes past just playing in the store. I've even helped run the store when he had a heart attack to keep his business running and ran a fund raiser to help pay for his hospital bills. We've always been close and go out of our way for each other, but this Christmas I think he decided to top any present he's ever done.

He gets me this box filled with other boxes and a note saying to open them in order.

The first few were candy and stuff, all the things I normally buy when playing there. One was a couple of cards I had set aside to pick up when I had the cash. The last box in the package had a pack of Innistrad in it. I didn't think too much of it, but opened it anyway to see what I got. He had hidden a different pack of cards inside the Innistrad pack.

If you're not crossing your 7's you're doing it wrong. It's the same thing in math: hook your T's otherwise they look like addition symbols.

There is a difference between North American and European handwriting, for sure, but European 1's and 7's can look similar depending on how you do it.

Does anyone here have those UNL cards with grey-bordered double-backs from AQ/Revised? I just got a few today, they'll be appearing as an add-on to my next scan. Longtime Lurker. I was planning on pimping my whole cube to Beta/Korean/Jap. Foil but since all my friends are complaining that they can't read the cards I am beginning to sell some stuff off.

I spoke with Richard/Pickle last year at Ovino6 in Milan and he had few of these for sale. Those were part of an Unlimited sheet, used to make test prints,so normal UNL rares on one side and Unl/ Antiquities on the other. Many of those are also miscut . He told me he had his exemplars (he had a few) restored by a professional book artisan (again, if I recall correctly) because there were multiple traces of glue on the backside of the cards (there were mtg cards glued on the misprinted side). He said he got them from an ex Carta Mundi employee who back in the days wanted some ''extra'' stuff to play with at home....:laugh:

I am still not 100% about Imperial Seal in this list, and I was thinking the same thing. There are certain situations where I would rather have a preordain, but it's been good over all.

The corners on the Savannah look iffy. Might want to check them out in greater detail or take a high res scan against a contrasting background. There have been quite a lot of miscut revised cards recently that were cut from a sheet, and they're similarly miscut to the savannah.

Not saying it was manually cut, but I'd check it again.

Just got 3rd in the SCG Atlanta open with this list. I scooped to Tony in the Semifinals since we're friends and there was a prize split. U/W stoneblade is really a bye for this deck though.

There are still a few pieces missing but my personal preference goes russian>chinese>japanese. I don't really get japanese unless russian and chinese foils don't exist, and I just find the old font simplified chinese much better looking.

I´m still not ready to post my entire deck and it´s modifications (when I post it, it wont be the deck itself, there will be an assorted lot of cards where i can build various versions of it), I am still missing a few russian foils, and for personal taste I will also replace the jap foil onslaught fetches with ru foil zen fetches. it was so easy to get them jap foiled but it is quite a task to ru foil them out :-/

I try everything Ru foil that is possible in ru foil, for the rest I have everything in japanese foil and in german foil, but i prefer japanese foil at the moment with one exception. I really like to have multiple languages in my deck. But I dislike the non-german european languages so I do not use them.

The sideboard is always in flux, but I have a Grapeshot, Tendrils, Infernal Tutor, and 3x Empty the Warrens that are fairly stationary. The island should really be a crystal vein which I am working on getting in a decent language.

I have a single Korean foil ponder I got for vintage but I thought it would just look weird in there with other different card face ponders. That said I hate the textless and I'm actually considering buying a play set of Korean non foil ponders just because of how much I dislike the ponders I have a play set of.

I'm not sure if they would even be legal for play in a sanctioned event. I believe those foil test prints (including Oath of Ghouls [?] and Survival of the Fittest) are considered stolen from Wizards.

I've heard the exact opposite. That the test prints were never supposed to be in circulation, and those that are in circulation were stolen by someone, either an employee of Wizards or an employee of whatever company ran the presses for the test prints.

I believe they were probably thrown out and probably taken by an employee. I guess trash is stolen property but at that point it's looking to be disposed, so is it really stealing? I was comparing it to the Slivers because iirc those were actually intended to be released and stolen or printed without permission.

I know where he got them from. They're legit, and I have to leave it at that. I have a number of CoTs and SotFs too (coincidentally, I own his CoT designs as well), and those were obtained legitimately too.

Test prints aren't obtained through dumpster diving. Cards like the double backed mana flare I posted above, yeah, that's essentially stuff that was meant to be disposed of. Stuff like the CoTs and the later test prints were given out legitimately to employees and made their way out from there. Stuff like the textless saga stuff was in product. Some is illegitimately leaked out, obviously, but that's occured only for the earlier test prints up to Destiny and a bit of Judgment. You're thinking of summer when you speak of dumpster diving. Stolen stuff like the Slivers are a markedly different case whereby the only way they could have make it into the public is by theft. The rest of the stuff has typically made it out the same way Garfield celebration cards have made it into the possession of collectors like me -- through purchases from people who were originally given them. Legitimately.

The CoTs are 100% legal for play, as are textless Karns.

The silver-bordered foil test prints are not tournament-legal due to their borders, but the BB ones are. The foil test prints that I once owned were given out to playtesters to test a new foiling process to see how it wore. They played them unsleeved and the edges wore down a bit but the fronts stayed nice and shiny.

Shrug, I can't imagine it would be that serious an issue considering the pic is there. I mean, I can't read the names on non-English cards that my opponents play, but they're still legal. It really depends on your judge and your opponents. I have never had issues in Vintage, and I've played some pretty crazy stuff. EDH, though, I play stuff in there that's not fair at all. I play split cards in EDH that don't exist.

it´s really good to live in germany :-)

everything is german foil on those pictures, that´s what is left. I wanted to go for 120 pieces, but then i had to aquire some hardcore russian foils and booster boxes and I sold a complete playset of 40 3 or 4 weeks ago :-/

but now I can continue =)

I have a giant pimping question.

I have 2 versions of Caltrops for UB Bridgewalker.dec. Although this may not be a deck to beat, I would still like to play it in style.

I have an Urza's Destiny foil and a 7th Edition foil. Urza's Destiny was the first set with foil prints, but 7th edition is the 'beta' of foils. I don't know which version to pick. Which one would you choose?

But the 7th Foils are some of my favorites, mostly because of the old card frame. 7th foil Llanowars are my ideals.

An important factor in this equation is the inclusion of foil 7th Ensnaring Bridges in the deck. Please take that into account. This is the toughest pimping challenge I've encountered so far!

On caltrops: I think it comes down to art preference. I like both pieces of art a lot, but I personally would get the 7th ed. foil version. I like the spikeballs in that one and 7th ed. foils belong together since you said you have foil 7th ensnaring bridge I would go with 7th for that reason.

But those are some really awesome foil russian cards sir. I am a fan.

Fay Jones is still alive I believe but Fay doesn't like to sign stasis, because of the art. Signed copies of stasis are incredibly hard to find for this reason and kudos to Markers for getting some copies and I love how you got on magic arcana with the signed beta set, major kudos to you sir.

This is why Markers and the Brazilian guy have like 10+ each ... There so much more rare signatures out there.

Because the art is notoriously awful? And I usually don't see signed copies of stasis although maybe that's just me I'm sure boatloads of people own signed copies of stasis hence the reason I've never seen a signed copy in real life. I know there are rare signatures, as Markers has posted about signed cards that are a bitch to find like red elemental blast because Richard Thomas doesn't sign by mail and tracking him down is quite difficult according to Markers. Same with other obscure artists I'm sure that drew art for alpha/beta and a few years later stopped producing art for mtg.

Fay Jones is a very rare signature. I mean, you're the "pimp" guy who shits on other people's cards from time to time, you should understand the concept of "hard to find".

We have a few because we jumped through the hoops in contacting her. In my case, she initially didn't even want to talk to me when she heard I collected Magic. Seems she's gotten a good bit of hate mail for the art piece, believe it or not.

I genuinely like the art, and explained that, and six months later I got the cards I sent off to get signed, plus a whole bunch of other Stasis proofs. Not sure how it went down with Markers, if he got it straight from her or from someone else.
