Nice! How was the Old Skool? B.C. missed most of it, so I didn't get a report, just a look at his artist altered Lotus and Ancestral (they look pretty damn sweet), commentary on Vintage (his performance there didn't suck), and confirmation of what everyone was thinking about how boring/tedious Legacy seems more often than not these days (can't even be bothered to Enchantress @ SCG:Oakland this weekend).

But if I post, I might as well post some pimp. My normal preference is not for shiny stuff, but every once in a while something catches my eye. And then I get why some love foils.

One missed flip resulted directly in me getting my wang flattened by an opponents turn 1 main deck fucking Whirling Dervish. Then Heiner locked me up with Wall of Heat (and he hid it under my alpha paralyze so i would run a factory into it). Jaco I think got everyone with his 'Mind Twist Me I don't Care' Arcades Sabboth themed control deck.

Celebrated a t8 (which I promptly got Natural Derped out of again) at GP Nashtuskville with this beauty. The front is quite clean, but the back had some decent wear. I tried to talk them down on condition, but the dealer wouldn't budge too far. There's also Korean 5th ed. which is MUCH rarer. If you hate WB (why!?) Ice Age is your only option with German being supposedly marginally pimper than English

They are either 4th Ed or 2 player starter (they look exactly the same). 5th edition had DIFFERENT ART... Also, Japanese 4th Ed was available in both WB and BB, the former being rarer due to people wanting nothing to do with WB cards (the racists!). Come on guys, just do a tiny bit of research before correcting others >.>

I need some help with Pyroblast. It looks like I have to play the damn card and need suggestions on a pimp version. 5th ed jap seems to be the most pimp but white bordered in a black bordered deck seems awful. Also, I dont do signed cards.

Do you think the foil Russian version is rarer than the original foil Japanese? You open a specific foil rare in Onslaught once per 4400 boosters (there are 110 different rares and there's 1/40 chance to open a foil rare). In Khans of Tarkir, you open a specific foil rare once per 2178 boosters ((2/121)*(1/36)). So now it's twice as likely and many more boosters are opened, as there are many more players. But on other side, Russian is much less opened than Japanese.

Russian foil fetches from Kharns are way overpriced imho. I expect to see significant drops in 2015. Everybody knows about the value of Russian cards now so there is way more product about then there was during zendikar. If you have Russian foil zend fetches OK get Russian ones from Kharns to match (although the cards look completely different) but I expect the Jap foils from onslaught to end up being far rarer.

Why do you think it's a bubble? Supply is really small, and people really like Russian, as it's an exotic alphabet. It's hard to believe that supply is being hoarded in Russian, considering the opportunity cost of not selling them.

I don't think you can use this as a true comparison. 39 foil Russian sets > 14 foil Korean sets. So it makes sense for numbers similar to that. Sorry if I miscounted sets.

Yes exactly. I agree that Russian foil from older sets is very rare and often unavailable on the market. However, Kharns is a different story. There's lots of Russian Kharns being opened and that's why I expect to see price drops on those cards in 2015. The print run on Korean Kharns is smaller than Russian but Russian is still more expensive because 1. people prefer that language 2. people mistakenly think it is rarer. I like Russian foil but I prefer Japanese foil and it is much easier to get playsets of those cards. However, if you want to make money on MTG the best bet has been buying power, duals and summer - values on high-end foils are much flakier and generally they are far harder to move. As a collector it's nice to have cards that very few other people have however and Russian foil falls into that category.

Hey everyone, first time posting, and I just finished this a few weeks ago, so its time to start upgrading (getting the mirrodin moxes, judgement therapies, and finish the (gross) lotus petals). Not pictured are my revised duals, FBB is the final goal for this deck tbh.

I do prefer english foil, so hopefully I can off these git probes for a reasonable price someday. The pimp level is low, but I've been working on this with a low budget for about 3 years, so I'm pretty proud of it.

It's definitely novelty. Even in this thread it's usual to see very valuable cards like beta duals and power but it's very unusual to see foil Russian cards from older sets. Some people have never seen a foil Russian SFM or Dark Confidant.

If Korean hadn't been discontinued for some time, I'd be more apt to play it over Russian. Russian kind of filled the void for a while. For Vintage though I kind of like Korean. So I have quite a few double sets (SCM, Decay, DRS, Thalia, etc.) of Russian / Korean.

I like foil Russian Phyrexian robots because their symbol shows up in the script and text box watermark seamlessly. So much flava'. Otherwise I like German artifacts.

The foil Russian stuff from RAV is a pain to find. I was lucky I got that Ghost Quarter. Didin't pounce on some Twest when I saw them, but sprang for the Pfire first chance I got. Don't care to foil the groves when sets are >2k.

Portugeese foils are also rare, yet unwanted thrash... Also demand for premium russian is very small, how many russian foil cards/decks have you seen in real life? I saw 99% in Russian people's binders... their interest is to keep it scarce because then they dictate the price and can't lose money, ever, selling small amount for absurd prices whenever there is someone buying ... is it the same with korean? I don't really know but korean is more available due active korean sellers on ebay imo, russian from Russia are kept locked and sold personally

Whatever if Korean was 2 times smaller then Russian, it would be easier to find it, i believe, for some reasons that can't be explained quickly

Do you mean that the print run for Russian Khans of Tarkir is only 200 000 boosters? That's just 1652.89 copies of each mythic and 3305.79 of each rare (about as rare as Beta!). Or, if there's 1 foil rare per booster box: 45.91 copies of each mythic foil and 91.83 copies of each foil rare.

If that's true, then it's really rare. And Korean, by looking at Ebay, seems to be even rarer.

Russian cards are printed to cater to Russian reading players and there are far more of them than Korean. The print run is much larger because it's not just Russia but also former Soviet republics like Ukraine that demand Russian language cards. However, the distribution network is much worse than for Korean cards. Cards come to Seoul and if you know a couple of sellers there, you can basically get anything you want so long as you are willing to pay. There's still a lot of weeks of opening Kharns to go and already it's easy to get foil rares like Siege Rhino in the Russian language. I'm not saying that old Russian cards aren't very rare, they are. I am saying that Kharns is a different situation and foil fetches aren't rare like older Russian pimp foils (like thoughtseize from lorwyn). If you want variety in looking at MTG cards, try instagram.

I doubt it. I don't know who he is but if WotC tells Gary Adkison and half of Magic Librarities to fuck off when they ask for print run information I seriously doubt some rando-commando in Russia knows.

From my perspective a few years ago Japanese was the "popular" foreign language that commanded a rather high premium for it's "rarity" this transitioned to Korean (to a lesser extent) and now Russian. I'm of the opinion that it's complete bullshit and entirely rooted in flavor of the month driven sales. I.E. Russian players/sellers hype the shit out of their card stock to demand premiums. As time goes on and the cards become more accessible the prices go down. FWIW, it really doesn't strengthen my confidence when people post about how "hard/rare" Russian foils are to find while posting pages of foil Russian Snapcaster Mage. The hype-o-meter and my personal bullshit meter run high. Another great example were the first few Russian foil Dark Confidant posted on eBay and 100% shilled to widespread knowledge - this essentially established a price line for high end Russian foils that wasn't even rooted in actual market demand.

I just laugh at all the suckers in the High End Thread on Facebook who post for 400/500+. Not only are they being unreasonable and not making sales but they're going to screw themselves as once the majority of Eternal players complete their sets the market for them is going to stagnate and they will be unable to move them.

I think it's pretty clear both I and jamesh acknowledged this fact. The shill'd Confidants absolutely set a price point that changed the perception of the language of a large majority of individuals. It's fine if you want to believe what you want but I remember the past few years clearly and have nothing to gain either way. I agree there's Russian cards worth the money and are hard to find, Foil Crucible of Worlds is a great example. However it's no excuse for the current gouging that reminds me very much of Japanese cards ~8 years ago. If you want to claim demand fine, a card is worth what people will pay but stop claiming bullshit based off of made up numbers.

Do you mean that the print run for Russian Khans of Tarkir is only 200 000 boosters? That's just 1652.89 copies of each mythic and 3305.79 of each rare (about as rare as Beta!). Or, if there's 1 foil rare per booster box: 45.91 copies of each mythic foil and 91.83 copies of each foil rare.
If that's true, then it's really rare. And Korean, by looking at Ebay, seems to be even rarer.

Russian cards are printed to cater to Russian reading players and there are far more of them than Korean. The print run is much larger because it's not just Russia but also former Soviet republics like Ukraine that demand Russian language cards. However, the distribution network is much worse than for Korean cards. Cards come to Seoul and if you know a couple of sellers there, you can basically get anything you want so long as you are willing to pay. There's still a lot of weeks of opening Kharns to go and already it's easy to get foil rares like Siege Rhino in the Russian language. I'm not saying that old Russian cards aren't very rare, they are. I am saying that Kharns is a different situation and foil fetches aren't rare like older Russian pimp foils (like thoughtseize from lorwyn). If you want variety in looking at MTG cards, try instagram.

From my perspective a few years ago Japanese was the "popular" foreign language that commanded a rather high premium for it's "rarity" this transitioned to Korean (to a lesser extent) and now Russian. I'm of the opinion that it's complete bullshit and entirely rooted in flavor of the month driven sales. I.E. Russian players/sellers hype the shit out of their card stock to demand premiums. As time goes on and the cards become more accessible the prices go down. FWIW, it really doesn't strengthen my confidence when people post about how "hard/rare" Russian foils are to find while posting pages of foil Russian Snapcaster Mage. The hype-o-meter and my personal bullshit meter run high. Another great example were the first few Russian foil Dark Confidant posted on eBay and 100% shilled to widespread knowledge - this essentially established a price line for high end Russian foils that wasn't even rooted in actual market demand.

Anyone who has been to Korea knows that there is only a very small mtg community there (supported by foreigners living in Korea). Part of the reason for this is that the non-card gaming scene is enormous. Partially it's also because there is a stigma towards card gaming because some parents see it as similar to gambling. Korean cards are printed as much for collectors outside Korea as Korean players.

What do you say about estimating numbers of cards - it's very difficult. How many copies of foil Russian Linvala exist for example. 20? 100? Who can say. As far as I know the one that was on ebay for about $2000 for months didn't sell. There are foil sets of Russian Rise of the Eldrazi given as redemption so you can get Linvala out of those but there is no question it is a rare card. The cards from all these early sets printed in the Russian language are very scarce.

My point is that Kharns is different and I think we will see drops on values of these cards in 2015. I've had no problem getting dig, treasure cruise, rhino and I've seen lots of fetches on ebay. For me Japanese foil onslaught fetches are pimp and I think in the longer term these cards will be rarer than Russian. So the question is how many foil Japanese polluted deltas from Onslaught are there compared with Kharns (remember there are still lots of Kharns packs to be opened).

There is another important point for collectors and that is that the onslaught printing is the FIRST printing of fetches. Right now it doesn't matter as much but in the future when onslaught fetches have been reprinted 3 or 4 times (it will happen) the original printing will be very important to collectors.

A final point of how many of a certain card there is existing - there are always more cards than you think there are. Many collectors don't participate on forums like this and don't play the game - you will never see their sets of summer or playsets of foil Russian Emrakul.

If you don't like signed cards and you plan to play them for a long time, don't sign them. In any other case I would try to get them signed, in my opinion Jeff Laubenstein's signature adds value to the card, and is not ugly at all (so I don't think many people would stop buying it just for the signature).

signatures are ONLY valuable if you value them yourself or can find the right person to buy / trade them to. Ebay (the market) would indicate that signatures do not add noticeable value. Generally, in my experiences, dealers treat signatures as inked and value them less.

You are really scraping for a few dollars after you consider that if you want to realize the value you'll have to sell them in a specialty group and can't just ship them to a dealer. Are you that poor to justify the effort and pain? Also, you'll have to stare at it and remember that although you don't like signed cards you got a miserable card like show and tell signed in the desperate hope of squeezing a few more dollars out of it if you sell it years down the road.

Anyway, his signature is large and it will cover the bottom of your sorceries.

If you don't like signed cards and you plan to play them for a long time, don't sign them.

Given the fact that i play the Show and Tells in my main (and only, at least competitive) legacy deck, OmniTell, i'll keep them clean for now. Even reading the other answers this seems the right thing to do in my situation.


You are really scraping for a few dollars after you consider that if you want to realize the value you'll have to sell them in a specialty group and can't just ship them to a dealer. Are you that poor to justify the effort and pain? Also, you'll have to stare at it and remember that although you don't like signed cards you got a miserable card like show and tell signed in the desperate hope of squeezing a few more dollars out of it if you sell it years down the road.

signatures are ONLY valuable if you value them yourself or can find the right person to buy / trade them to. Ebay (the market) would indicate that signatures do not add noticeable value. Generally, in my experiences, dealers treat signatures as inked and value them less.

Because selling to dealers is always the best EV. Feel free to ship me all of your signed high end foils at lower than buy list prices because they are "inked". I've yet to encounter a single person worth my time that demanded I offer my cards at a lower price because they are signed. If you deal in high end cards signatures are valued.

It's really worth your time to actually pick up a decent paint marker for signatures as it looks infinitely better then a lot of the markers artists have on them. Obviously shit signatures with garbage markers will devalue a card.

I'm asking that all of my artist signatures are in black as well. I like consistency.

Speaking of "Artist expires", I believe everyone is still alive. Minus one of the cards I use as a sideboard divider, Cheatyface (Doug Chaffee). I'm on the lookout for a foil signed one in black, I have very low hopes though.

Voice of Resurgence was awesome all day. I think for the next Invitational I might put it in a normal Maverick shell. Bitterblossom was pretty sweet as a constant pressure against miracles.

It's situational. Depends on the card, depends on the degree of the miscut, depends on how many you can find. That last one especially for me. For example, with those you posted, I'd still run my FBBs. Though the two are pimp as fuck, they're still core set, not exceptionally miscut, and you don't have access to a full set. I might use the REB, but only if I needed a single copy, and it would depend on how well the border matches the rest of the deck.

It's true what you're saying, for cards worth more than ~100€ a signature may decrease it's price, as better is the condition of that card, more value will be lost with a signature. But this is the extreme case, for the rest of the cards a signature from the artist will always increase the price, sometimes more and sometimes less, depending on how hard is that signature to find and the base price of the card.

Picking BB P9 and Duals, cards most likely to be submitted for the ripoff that is slabbing is an exception to the rule.

Alters are a waste of time unless it's by a high quality artist doing repair work on a very damaged card (Klug). Of course garbage sharpie alters like garbage running out of ink thick tip sharpie signatures will devalue a card. Common sense is still applicable across the board here.

I too prefer thin tip black signatures, then silver if double signed. Blue > Purple > Red > Gold in that order.

A few I prefer in thick flat tip (not round) sharpies are Aleksi Briclot and Steve Argyle signatures.

I've got a couple of signed Jap foils for my stock Reanimator list on the way soon.

I have collected most of those pieces a long time ago (for example, I was playing my Tendrils V.Spanish in my Desire deck in T1.X in 2006...). Then I choose to finish the whole deck before taking care of the language. It was surely a mistake, and now I'm focused on the upgrade to a lone language.

It looks really nice, but yes, maybe going for a single language would lead to a better looking result. You already have many of the cards in japanese, but It seems that going that way will be really expensive, as you still lack some of the rare cards (like polluteds, rainforests, infernals and therapies..). It seems that you also like chinese, and if you took this other route, you could downgrade the japanese cards to chinese, and get more chinese cards with the remaining money (but you would lose the led's).
It's not an easy decision, but the good think is that you're not in a hurry, just play with the cards and wait for good offers!
P.S.: I always prefer english cards, but I'm ok with people wanting other languages, less demand for my wants :P
